Alternating Name Chain

Standard 24 Team Format
Seasons: All
League ID#: 142495 (Don't need to signup here, just enter your team).

In this league you'll Chain your players using their Names. However, you must alternate each selection between their First Name and Last Name.

To start your Chain, use a player that has a unique First or Last Name. Examples: Ruth, Musial, Guidry, Tiant. Keep in mind you'll need the other half of their Name to link to another player, Babe (Ruth), Stan (Musial), Ron (Guidry), Luis (Tiant) all work.
If a players real or full name is different from what is used in the WIS database then it is ok to use that name as a link.
For instance; in baseball-reference.com Addie Joss's real full name is Adrian Joss. So any other player with a first name of Adrian would be eligible.

After picking your first Player then use the other half of his Name to link to another player and then start alternating between First and Last Names.
Example: #1.Lou Boudreau, #2.Lou Brock, #3.Greg Brock, #4.Greg Maddux, #5.Mike Maddux, #6.Mike Scott, #7.George Scott, #8.George Brett, #9.Ken Brett, #10.Ken Williams, #11.Ted Williams, and so on.....to #25.Will Clark.

I will allow First Names to be a similar version, Bob/Bobby/Rob/Robert/Roberto, John/Johnny/Jon, Al/Allen/Alan, are ok. Albert/Alvin/Alex are not.
Any questions on name similarity, please ask.
If you are using exact names for your chain then variations will be allowed as being different. If you are using variations of names as links then only 1 instance of that variation is allowed.
Last Names must be exact.

You can only use each Name once as a link.
I have tried many different combinations and this is not easy as you might think. You won't always be able to take the player you want because the next link won't work. Sometimes taking a scrub will get you back on track, like the "Greg Brock" pick listed above.

Name your Team after the First and Last players in your Chain. (LouBoudreau/WillClark)
When you enter your team into the league please SiteMail me your Chain.

Thank You!

Are you going only based on what the name is in the WIS database? Example 1911-1930 Grover Alexander but WIS uses his nickname, Pete.

What about Daniels for a last name and Daniel for a first name ?

Or Rogers - Roger ?

Or Andrews - Andrew ?

Interesting premise. Two questions:

1. Does the rule about using each name only once apply to first names also, or only to last names?

2. Would you consider expanding the rule about starting the chain with a player with a unique last name to also include players with a unique first name?

The "S" is ok. So Rogers Hornsby to a Roger is ok.

1.All Names
2.If that helps fill the league sure. Changed.

One other note.......

You cannot use a Last Name to link to a First Name or vice versa. Only Last Name to Last Name and First Name to First Name.
Example: Larry Walker to Walker Cooper is not allowed.

Need clarification on acceptable first name matches.

Jim = James?
Bill = William?
Will = William?

I always like new challenges so I'll tinker with a team.
My two cents is that its easier to restrict the first names to the same as surnames in that they have to match the WIS database exactly. That would resolve a lot of the questions. Ed equals Ed while Eddie equals Eddie, etc. But I respect this is bhead408's idea and league.

Those 3 will work.

For what it's worth. I built my team using exact names.
Just thought this would fill easier if I lessened that restriction. Kudos to anyone who uses exact first names.
I'll post my chain if/after the league fills.

If you use exact names, can you then use Bill and Bill and Willie and Willie in your chain? Or would that still contravene the same name used once rule?
4/15/2025 3:40 PM
Willie is starting to enter the gray area of being the same to Bill or Billy or William. I would consider Willie to be different.

Let's add this additional rule:
If you are using exact names for your chain then variations will be allowed as being different. If you are using variations of names as links then only 1 instance of that variation is allowed.

So if you use Bill White to Bill Mazeroski, you can still use Billy Williams to Billy Hamilton.
If you use Bill White to Billy Hamilton then all other versions of Bill, William, Billy are off-the-board. Make Sense?
