Contract Option Question... Topic

I have a veteran pitcher with a mutual option. If I decline the option would I be able to receive any Type A or B free agency compensation if he is signed by someone else? Thank you in advance

If you decline the option, you will not be eligible to receive a Type A or B. If the player declines the option and elects Free Agency, you may still receive a Type A or B in compensation if it states it in the player's notes via the FA page.

brickyard is correct. Think of a team declining an option as releasing a player. A player declining the option is declaring free agency.

I have a player with a mutual option on his 10 million salary for next season. I want to sign him to a 3-4 year deal at a better value. If I decline the option will he then move into my free agent pool where I can sign him to a contract or is there a chance he declares free agency?

Yes, he will move into your free agent pool, but there is a significant chance that he'll say, "Sorry, I'm filing for free agency no matter what."

Especially if he's likely to be Type A. (Well, he won't be Type A because you release him, but if his ratings are Type A level is what I mean.)
