Ohtani Gambling Scandal Topic

Is gambling illegal in California and can MLB employees gamble?

Sports gambling is legal in 38 states and Washington, D.C., but it is not legal in California, according to the National Gaming Association.

However, in other states where it is legal, it is only allowed through approved retail or online sportsbooks -- none of which accept gambling on credit as Mizuhara is alleged to have done. Mizuhara told ESPN that he did not realize gambling through Bowyer was considered illegal, and he had previously gambled on legal betting apps in other states.

Technically in California the only way to gamble on sports legally is to drive to Vegas.calling by phone would be illegal.

Ohtani’s people first said he paid off the translato’s debt.(Also illegal- acting a collector for illegal gambling enterprise. This was quickly changed to the translator stole the money.

Will there be a real investigation? Suspension? White wash?

One local radio host predicted 1. Translated pleads guilty. 2. Ohtani gets little to no punishment. 3. Translator returns to Japan, after 6 months in a Federal daycare, where some mysterious company pays him 1 mil/year for life.

“Say it ain’t so Joe”

If Ohtani was not gambling then leave him alone.
Pete Rose can be an adjudicator.

No one is going after Ohtani. But if he screws up worse than this in the future, they'll bring this back.

That makes sense. He needs an attender and the team is responsible for allowing him to be brought down by such a dog track degenerate. The team should have been protecting him as they should.

Not sure what happened here but there is a huge institutional incentive to downplay any negative stories associated with sports betting. Sports media is being propped up by gambling ad dollars and the leagues are all in bed with the sports betting sites too. Hell a bunch of pro venues have sports books inside the stadium.

So I don’t think you’re gonna see too many people whose livelihoods depend on sports betting revenue digging too deep into whether MLBs biggest star is blowing millions on gambling.

Not me. I am disgusted by sports betting and the tv commercials luring the unsuspecting to eventual financial ruin.

But Othoi should not be in any trouble because of what his assistant did. I am assuming that Othoi did not gamble.

Big time gambling is for suckers.

I’m not sure ig Ohtani is totally innocent, or partly guilty. I do think a full investigation is warranted.

CNN —

Major League Baseball announced it has launched an investigation into the allegations surrounding Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani and his longtime interpreter Ippei Mizuhara on Friday.

“Major League Baseball has been gathering information since we learned about the allegations involving Shohei Ohtani and Ippei Mizuhari from the news media,” the league said in a news release. “Earlier today, our Department of Investigations (DOI) began their formal process investigating the matter.”

What makes me think twice is that the reports say that the translator has millions in gambling debts. How could that be.
It makes one wonder if the translator is taking the fall as the loyal friend. Maybe all of the gambling was going through the translator.

Yeah, the first problem is how Mizuhara could run up $4.5 million of Ohtani's money in debt. Why would an illegal bookie think he was good for that much money unless he had some guarantee that Ohtani and his money were backing up his friend.

Second problem is that the two of them are together 24/7. He is not just an interpreter they practice together, eat together, etc.

So how could Ohtani not know his money was missing or thst his friend was gambling.

Third problem is that Mizuhara was always in the Angels' locker room interpreting, so he had insider info.

Fourth, I have no doubt that the Dodgers and MLB want to cover for any involvement by Ohtani, but this is an FBI investigation. Ohtani sent two bank transfer payments for half a million each to an illegal bookie.

Sure looks like a huge problem for MLB. And personally I can't find a way to rationalize excusing the player in this situation. No matter who the player be.

As bags said............. A Rose is a Rose.
And this is about a billion times worse than what Rose did!
