My best team was stuck in a brutal division. We won 96 games, but got stuck behind 105 and 106 win teams. 4th place still won 88. I built my offense around 1924 Babe Ruth & 1886 King Kelly. We played in Riverfront Stadium.
Ruth batted 395/527/887 with 49 doubles, 4 triples, 78 HR and 244 RBI. I really couldn't have asked for more from Ruth.
Kelly batted 408/497/559 with 48 doubles, 9 triples, 11 HR and 122 RBI. I was a bit underwhelmed with his production.
BUT - I had a TREMENDOUS surprise from an unexpected source. Spending 30mil on 2 offensive players makes you get really creative with the other 6 players. The last position I filled when I drafted was 1b. I had just under 3mil left, and I wanted the best player I could get that I thought wouldn't suck. I selected 2014 Billy Butler. He's listed as a DH, but has 37 games at 1B with a .993 fielding percentage. There were only 2 seasons in his performance history, and they weren't bad.
Butler batted 282/338/398 with 47 doubles, 1 triple, 9 HR and 140 RBI !!! For the first half of the season, I was batting him 7th, but he was exceeding expectations, so I actually moved him into the 5-spot, just behind Ruth. I've never been so pleased with a full-time, sub-3mil player in an open league. I'm definitely going to use him in future leagues.
I had a total of 4 different teams for this particular bounty - and this was the best one by a large margin. I might give it another run, but I've got to find a way to come up with slightly better pitching.
