The "handful of far leftists" in city after city after city, all across America, you mean. Why can't you face reality? There is (was maybe, until the disastrous results became apparent) a much, much larger group than you'd like to admit, that favor(ed) it.
I understand trying to distance yourself from those people, but you gotta take their "bad" with their "good".
