Missing 100 others.......... like Ring Them Bells, or Wiggle Waggle, or "When The Deal Goes Down" or "God Knows", plenty of others.
Well, then it would be a Top 200!
6/14/2021 4:24 PM
I would include make you feel my love - one of the most beautiful ballads ever written.

I would have the same for 1-3 and 5 and probably queen Jane approximately higher
but extremely great list.

I actually prefer Dylan's Tambourine Man to the Byrds' -- more soulful, less poppy. But great list, thunder. Some of my personal faves are in your bottom 20 (One More Cup of Coffee, You Ain't Going Nowhere, The Man in Me) but I can't think of many that I really like that you've left out completely. Maybe one from 20 year old Bob's first album, Song to Woody. Seems incredible he was ever 20!
Thanks, crazy. High praise coming from you. And funny you should say that about Mr. Tambourine Man. Even as I was writing those words, I was thinking "Do I really prefer The Byrds' version?" All Along The Watchtower is a more clear-cut case.

Thanks, dino. Back to you for your Stones and Dylan lists when you have the chance. And I'm starting to think I prefer your Beatles list to my own, even though it's a little Macca-centric. :-)
6/14/2021 5:44 PM
I’m not sure I can do a stones or Dylan list better then yours and I would like to see the Crazy lists because he is also a true expert of those 2.
6/14/2021 5:46 PM
Amen to that. Would love to see Crazy's lists, peppered with a few of his trademark "Believe it or Don't"(TM) odd facts. But no pressure...
6/14/2021 5:53 PM
Thanks for the kind words, fellas, but honestly, I don't have the stamina and patience to make a top 100 list. It would drive me nuts working out if a song should be #74 or #75, ha ha. I enjoy looking at others' lists, especially people who know their stuff, and wondering why a song I've never paid much attention to made it on a list, and then going off to give it a fresh listen. So thank you for that, and for some fun reading.

if I could only add another 50.
I had 38 out of 100 from the solo catalogue.
Great list, dino. Love seeing Back in the USSR in the top 10. Lady Madonna at #3 -- wow. See how they run. And props for including the brilliant I Me Mine. Lots of great George Harrison B sides that could have made my Top 100 -- For You Blue, Old Brown Shoe, maybe even Not Guilty.
Thanks - lots of fun.
one song I recommend listening to if one never heard it is the Wings song - I’m Carrying.
achingly beautiful song that would have been a classic
if it was on the White Album. It’s very special.

same for Little Lamb/ Dragonfly
Totally agree that you rated Oh Darling so highly. Often overlooked, I think it's one of Paul's finest vocal performances.

I saw him at CitiField a few years back and he brought the house down with an acoustic piano solo version.

Don't know about Strawberry Fields as #1 though...
I’m glad you agree on oh darling. He really does belt it out and it is such a great rock and roll song - it’s got 50s with great 60s Beatles guitar crunch. Let me roll it was a great sequel.

where would you put strawberry fields on your list.
Thunder had it highly regarded too - he had it second.
In all seriousness, Strawberry Fields is a fitting and appropriate memorial in Central Park.

As a Beatles song, it might be in my bottom 15-20%. A very whiney John and it just draaaaaaggggggs. Otherwise Magical Mystery has Your Mother Should Know and Hello Goodbye -eyla aloha- which could be top 25. And of course All You Need Is Love is transcendent (how is THAT not on your list?)
This is like picking an All-Star team using an entire decade of players. So much talent.

I think a better way to rank such a wealth of material is to go album by album and name the "10's"

No time now but the first few 10s showing up on Dino's list for example don't show up til 6 and 7. Bulldog is a 10.

I'll try to do an album by album.

Reminds me of a conversation I had a long time ago with a journalist who used to publish a list of the 100 most powerful people in Hollywood for the now defunct Premiere Magazine. In pointing out that his list was arbitrary and subjective, I made the mistake of saying, "It's like trying to figure out whether to rank Good Vibrations or Wild Thing as the better song." He looked at me like I'd just arrived from Mars and said, "Are you kidding me? Good Vibrations is a masterpiece. Wild Thing is just dumb pop music." In retrospect, he was partially right, and I consider Good Vibrations to be one of the 5 or 10 best songs ever written. But I've always had a special place in my heart for the dopey raw energy of Wild Thing.

I only like certain kinds of critics.
the kind that respect music and music listeners.
To me both songs are masterpieces and I’m against music competition.
if I like it I like it.
I don’t like critics who are elitists.
I think anyone that could call an iconic true heart of rock and roll song that has never lost its vitality and freshness dumb pop lives to criticize and not love the music.

Calling All Acoustic Heads

here is a band you may never have heard and just might love.

The band is The Kings of Convenience.
they are a folk duo from Norway.

Imagine Simon and Garfunkel meet Pete Drake meet Belle and Sebastian meet Haircut 100. I even heard a little jobim on a few songs.

they have been around since 2001 and after a 9 year hiatus have a new 2021 album.

it is a quiet heady melodic mix and very sleepy hollow stuff.
