You may need an all hands on deck approach, checking the boxes for starters to be used in relief. Be sure to utilize AAA early on. They make good sacrificial lambs if you need to rest guys a game or two. Perhaps extend the starters an extra 5-10 pitches for a few starts as well.

yeah, and I have no problem with these guys pitching around 80%, I figure their quality is good enough to see a little fatigue. It's my first attempt though, so I don't fully expect to succeed this time, but I have team #2 built and ready to go just in case ha

Do you find that Johnson can pitch multiple games in a row? Or is there “frequency fatigue” that only lets him pitch every other, regardless of his total inning count?

early on, I've hit a bit of "frequency fatigue". He started off throwing 4 straight, and has twice since thrown back to back, but hits frequency fatigue and needs to skip a start after 7 of his starts. As the season goes on though I think he'll start getting more consecutive games, and if I'd done better in the beginning to balance his starts I think I'd be in a better place now

All pitchers, regardless of quantity of IP are bound by the same fatigue limitations. For appearances, and what we call "appearance fatigue" that is set at roughly 70% of a teams games. To get the most appearances out of a pitcher you have to rest them the first X number of games (at least 1 and up to 6 depending on what your team and your nerves can handle). This bypasses both the early-season fatigue issue and get's them past the point of always being "on-pace" for more than 70% of team appearances every game they come in for for the first part of the season. There's a thread floating around here somewhere on John Clarkson or Silver King (hope it's still available) where I posted charts and game logs showing how to get more than 100 games started or more than 700 innings from a pitcher, or how to get more than 117 games played. I know there's a chart from a theme league I ran where one of the guys got 120+ appearances (from memory I think it was 123 or 127) out of a pitcher without dealing with appearance fatigue.

Yeah, I'm not using Silver King, either. I've got Ed Seward (the current record holder for wins, by the way).

After 28 games Seward is 15-1, on pace for 86 wins. I think he's got an outside shot at 80, but who knows.
Jinxed Seward with this post. He's dropped off in the past 15 games, now has 19 wins in 43 games, on pace for 71.5 wins....

at the 100 game mark...Ed Walsh 30-5, Cy Young 29-10, on track for 49 and 47 respectively. need to pick it up! a run of no decisions where they get pulled after 7 in a 2-2 type game have been killing the pace

Dan Casey started out well, then some no decisions have slowed him. He has been outstanding...

40 games into my 80 win team, we’re 25-15 and Walter Johnson is 15-3. On pace for about 60 wins, but it’s a long season and if he gets really hot, there’s still a sliver of hope! Not a good as I’d hoped, definitely seeing areas I can improve the next team.

120 game mark... We're 89-31. Big Ed 36-6 (pace= 48.6) and Cy is 34-13 (pace = 45.9). Cy has been slacking but we had burned out some AAA before the deadline and have some stellar reinforcements getting called up for the stretch run.

These two each have 16 games left... they’ll likely fall just short of 50-50, but they’ve had a fabulous run so far:

Player SN T G GS CG SHO W L SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB SO OAV OBP SLG WHIP ERA
Maddux, Greg 1996 R 65 0 0 0 38 9 0 0 254.7 206 75 59 9 31 150 .215 .241 .304 .93 2.09
Halladay, Roy 2011 R 65 0 0 0 37 6 2 2 232.0 202 66 56 5 40 166 .229 .268 .281 1.04 2.17
I'm going all-in on this one:
Player SN T G GS CG SHO W L SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB SO OAV OBP SLG WHIP ERA
Maddux, Greg 1996 R 76 0 0 0 48 9 0 0 304.7 240 85 68 11 36 174 .211 .236 .296 .91 2.01
Halladay, Roy 2011 R 77 0 0 0 45 7 2 2 284.3 250 79 68 6 48 205 .230 .267 .281 1.05 2.15

With 7 games left, I've rearranged my rotation so that it goes Halladay, Maddux, Halladay, Halladay, Maddux, Halladay, Halladay. I'll have to win out and decisions will have to go their way, but they have a long-shot chance still. If I didn't rearrange, Maddux would probably reach 51 or 52 and Halladay would probably finish with 47 or 48. Halladay also picked up 2 saves because Joss went too deep and got the W on just 40 pitches twice giving Halladay 4-inning saves. Ultimately, those saves could cost me the 50-50. Excitingly, both Maddux and Halladay are tracking to set new bests for their respective PH (barring any major blow ups over these last few games).

Going for 80 wins with Walter Johnson, this stretch of games was particularly exciting. He pitched in 8 consecutive team games and got the W in each of the first 5. He's currently tracking for 64 wins, well short of 80, but he's getting a ton of no decisions as the team keeps winning in extras or after Johnson come out of the game. If my offense can start scoring earlier and he can keep up this performance, he has a chance still. I'm pushing his appearances and he should pitch in 125+ games.
