Trump’s national security advisers warned him not to congratulate Putin. He did it anyway.

President Trump did not follow specific warnings from his national security advisers when he congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin Tuesday on his reelection, including a section in his briefing materials in all-capital letters stating “DO NOT CONGRATULATE,” according to officials familiar with the call.

Trump also chose not to heed talking points from aides instructing him to condemn Putin about the recent poisoning of a former Russian spy in the United Kingdom with a powerful nerve agent, a case that both the British and U.S. governments have blamed on Moscow.

The president’s conversation with Putin, which Trump called a “very good call,” prompted fresh criticism of his muted tone toward one of the United States’s biggest geopolitical rivals amid the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russia’s election interference and the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian officials.

Although the Trump administration has taken a tougher stance toward Russia recently — including new sanctions last week on some entities for election meddling and cyber attacks — the president has declined to forcefully join London in denouncing Moscow for the poisoning of Sergie Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury this month. They remain critically ill.

Trump told reporters that he had offered his well wishes on Putin’s new six-year term during a conversation on a range of topics, including arms control and the security situations in Syria and North Korea. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Skripal’s case was not discussed. Information on Syria and North Korea were also provided to the president in writing before the call, officials said.

“We’ll probably be meeting in the not-too-distant future,” Trump said of Putin, though Sanders emphasized that nothing was planned.

The White House press office declined to comment on the briefing materials given to Trump. Two people familiar with the notecards acknowledged that they included instructions not to congratulate Putin. But a senior White House official emphasized that national security adviser H.R. McMaster did not mention the issue during a telephone briefing with the president, who was in the White House residence ahead of and during his conversation with Putin.

It was not clear whether Trump read the notes, administration officials said. Trump, who initiated the call, opened it with the congratulations for Putin, one person familiar with the conversation said.

Good for Trump. A lot of guys who were up to their necks in Russian collusion/conspiracy/money laundering investigations would lay low after Putin won another one of his sham elections. Trump just says, "Eff that, my buddy stole another election and I'm going to congratulate him!"

That story is a joke. It's the Wash Post. Zero credibility.

Just another organized attack by the leftist media on the legally elected President.
it was nice of you to call them organized.
at least we still have a free press left-ish.

Another school shooting today! Republicans are about to get a lot richer.
Were 17 more kids murdered?

How did it end?

Who stopped it and HOW?
A security guard did, with a gun. Good job by him! All for better security in schools!
Thanks for agreeing with Trump.

the shooter did not have an assault weapon...and he was only focused on his ex gf.

Are you defending the shooter or attacking the hero?
3/20/2018 10:49 PM
im distinguishing the ability of the hero when he faces a regular gun instead of assault weapon......you cant say with any confidence that the casualties would have been low if the shooter had an ar-15.
3/20/2018 11:06 PM
It only takes one bullet to eliminate a mass murderer.

I'm very confused right now because it seems the simplest of common sense that the outcome was the best possible and made possible by an armed defender on premise to save the lives of defenseless children attacked by an armed thug bent on murder or intimidation.

THIS ENDS THE ARGUMENT.

ON one hand a guy slaughters 17 kids.

ON the other hand, a guy with a gun saves countless lives.

ARGUMENT OVER! SETTLED!

GUNS save innocent lives.

SAVE OUR CHILDREN!

3/20/2018 11:17 PM
what argument ..the officer is a hero.
lets all be heroes and ban assault weapons.
you cant expect low casualties when it is a cop with a gun vs an ar-15.
cant put our head in the sand.
join the march on march 24.

Both of you have a good point and are correct.

DOUG is correct because the shooting was prevented by an armed security guard.
DINO is correct because there would have been far more casualties if the shooter had an Ar-15.
TANG is correct because security guards are good, but arming teachers is still a terrible idea.
3/21/2018 8:57 AM
everyone everywhere points out that the guard prevented more shooting...kudos and gigantic thanks to him.....that is not in dispute by anyone with a brain..certainly not by me...thats a given and the not the substance of my comments...it isnt a point.....we all know what the guard did....i never ignored that.....i have a brain.
my comments were a bit more important then discussing the obvious and leaving it there........the nra supporters will paint the scenario that a guard or police officer or trained teacher with a handgun can stop a shooter with an assault weapon.
3/21/2018 10:19 AM
Exactly Dino. I am a staunch advocate of better security guards in schools. It has the same upside as arming teachers without a downside, and they are actually trained to handle that situation. A teacher has no chance against an Ar-15.
3/21/2018 10:21 AM
It's funny how everyone is suddenly shouting about this but ignoring the armed teacher in California that discharged his weapon in a classroom injuring a student, or the armed teacher in Georgia that barricaded himself in a classroom during school hours causing a standoff....just last week.

The same people who talk about media bias and fake news stay in their basement and don't say a word when **** like that happens.

This was a trained police officer. There's NOTHING wrong with that. Arming teachers is a terrible idea.
3/21/2018 11:09 AM
i totally agree with both of you about teachers being armed....horrible.....the calif. story was very very significant.......probably would never have happened without the hoopla about arming teachers......i didnt hear about the ga. story.
