Cambridge Analytica did not steal the data from Facebook. Saying that, I know they're catching major scrutiny in the U.K. For stuff, so we'll wait to find out more.
i honestly dont fully understand what happened but it sounds like a serious story.

Essentially, Facebook uses API's to target audiences for adds. Cambridge Analytica came up with algorithms that were better and more targeted than facebooks. The outrage appears to be a whole lot of nothing.

If you really want to know what happened, go to Facebook. Create an add and then narrow your audience. Make sure to hit cancel at the end.

If I was campaigning for Obama and wanted to reach people in rural GA, I could create an add saying that "Obama doesn't plan to take anyone's guns" and then target hunters with the ad. It would target people who discussed hunting in their posts.

You do realize that if you did to Islam what you did to Judaism, you would be on their hit list, correct? So now you don't like moderate Muslims or Republicans? Man you change your tune hourly. I call BS on your Jewish faith. Sorry. I just don't believe you.
How did I change my tune?

You can believe whatever you want, but you are being extremely immature.

I don't know Coach. From what I've read/heard this Cambridge/Facebook deal is a whole lot more sinister than just "targeted ad purchases".............

Seems that, (somehow??) Cambridge (founded by Steve Bannon and others) got access to the Facebook user database and subsequently USED that information to spread (what amounts to) propaganda/Fake News favorable to trump to a specifically "targeted" sub-set of Facebook users whom Cambridge was able to (somehow) conclude were susceptible to an "information campaign" designed to illicit favorable opinions of Trump.

In other words, spread lies to gullible, hapless morons, (some who usually don't vote!) and get those hapless sheep whipped into a frenzy of support for Trump. Dupe the dumb and least informed into believing "alternate reality"........... CONTROL the daily media talking points by creating drama..........

There's a whole lot of doofusses gonna be really angry when they FINALLY find out they've been played for the hapless idiots they are!
Wish I could laugh about it...............

The "fake news" part may or may not be true. I haven't seen any examples of the fake news, but they can do this without stealing the data. I can write any article I want and then choose who it is targeted at.

Saying that, like I told Dino, Cambridge Analytica is facing hard scrutiny in the U.K. Right now, so I don't want to prejudge the situation.

I firmly believe that they came across the data for Trump's campaign legitimately and I haven't seen any examples of the fake news.

You have never seen examples of fake news on Facebook? I see it all the time.

Apparently the issue is whether (or not) the facebook user agreement allows this sort of "mining" by outside interests for political purposes. It DOES allow Facebook to (essentially) sell targeted advertising, apparently. I, also, am not a facebook........... or ANY OTHER KIND of social media (except this, if this counts!) user. Won't be a twit, etc......... don't even have/want a smart phone. Purposefully unplugged and staying that way!

I only get on social media for business and marketing purposes. I don't browse.

I never said there wasn't any fake news on Facebook. I said I have not seen any examples where Cambridge Analytica was involved. If you have some, please post.

Obama did the same thing with Facebook in 2012. It's not unprecedented.

Micro-targeting has been going on for many years. It's just much easier now with the internet.

Also, Facebook actually reached out to Clinton to help her with this and she declined. She missed a great resource.
3/20/2018 12:34 PM
i dont think it is right that people on a social media site should be mined without consent.
3/20/2018 12:35 PM
That was my first reaction too, but the more I thought about it, my view changed to people are being offered a service for free and it is optional whether or not they sign up. If you don't want companies having your information, stay away. I don't really have a problem with it.
