That gives me an idea, though. We'll use another stat that measures offense similarly to WAR but doesn't include defense. It's also a rate stat, not cumulative, but the top 10s will only include qualified hitters.

OPS+

Edgar Martinez was in the Major League top 10 in OPS+ five times, including #1 overall once.

Really? There's no database that show oWAR? It's only WAR or nothing? I find that SOOOOOO hard to believe. I'm trying to put EM on equal footing offensively to find out if he was a "fantastic hitter" or not.

oWAR assumes league average defense.

You can look up offensive runs on Fangraphs. It's the hitting/baserunning component of WAR with no defensive component. They don't do an easily searched year by year top ten, but of hitters with more than 5000 PAs, Edgar Martinez is 41st all time.

I'd rank that as fantastic.

Nope. All I see is EM in the top 10 of WAR one time in 7 years. I don't call that "fantastic" at all. If you're not gonna bring a glove, you better hit like a beast. 1 time, 7 years, top 10 is not beastly.

How many times would EM have to be in the AL top ten in fangraphs' offensive runs for you to categorize him as a fantastic hitter?
