To play baseball you need equipment, and it cost 300 dollars to do summer baseball. My family could afford that. His could not. So because of my privledge, I would get more and better opportunities, despite not being nessesarily better or working harder. All jobs are like that. Resources cost money.

1. You can probably PERSONALLY attest that many kids in poor neighborhoods also have no interest in going to school. It's not cool. They get made fun of for being smart. There's not a lot of support at home, single parents or unemployed with no money. Kids gotta start earning.

We barely had enough equipment to get a basic education. When I was in sixth grade, we had about 20 kids per class, three classes in a grade. We had to hire three new teachers before my sixth grade year, because all the previous ones quit. The school had a lot of poor kids in it, with terrible influences. One of our teachers that year quit mid-year, so we had to pack that class into the other two classes. We did not have many field trips or oportunities compared to those in other schools. We did not have a fair chance. Yes, we had an opportunity, but we were behind from the start. Do you see what I mean, Boris?

My parents were behind from the start... And theirs even more than them. Wealth accumulation is generational and it takes a long time to acquire.... There's no short cut. Not nessesarily. Let me give you an example. When I was in high school, I played baseball. Let's say that I had a friend at the same skill level as me, let's even say he was better and worked harder. To play baseball you need equipment, and it cost 300 dollars to do summer baseball. My family could afford that. His could not. So because of my privledge, I would get more and better opportunities, despite not being nessesarily better or working harder. All jobs are like that. Resources cost money.

There are lots of charities that help fund access to sports for lmi families.


Btw - the finnish unemployment rate for youths is over 20%, much like France. You think that's a good thing?

Not in all communities, and the access is not very good.

I don't ses how the unemployment rates relatea to this.

Because these countries send everyone to school for free.... And now they have no jobs for 1 of every 4 that graduate. Do you really want a socialist system where that's the case?

As it stands now America has jobs for anyone who wants one. Start flipping burgers, do well, get promoted to shift supervisor, do well, get promoted to store manager, do well, switch and manage at a different company for more money, do well..... You get the idea. France and Finland don't want to hire anybody. USA does, with or without a college degree. Why should Joe taxpayer be in the hook if it's not needed?

Don't compare the US to the Nordic Countries who are for the most part homogeneous and pay next to nothing for military spend or innovation. What was the last innovative tool created by Finland. If you recall, Iceland recently went bankrupt.

1. You can probably PERSONALLY attest that many kids in poor neighborhoods also have no interest in going to school. It's not cool. They get made fun of for being smart. There's not a lot of support at home, single parents or unemployed with no money. Kids gotta start earning.

How do you think free college will help when this is a cultural issue? The government can't fix this ... It's got to come from the community leaders (parents, teachers, pastors, local leadership).

7000 kids drop out of highschool each day in the USA... How will free college help reduce that #? High school is already 'free'.

I can agree with you here. However, the lackof resources in schools shows them that this does not matter. I have less interest in going to an old, crumbling school than one that takes edu. serously. Yes, it is a cultural issue. The culture is that school does not matter, because of the school they are in. I know people who have said that very thing. My dad works with people in poverty every day. You have to walk a mile in someone's shoes to understand. I would suggest taking a poverty simulation. If someone in poverty doesn't have access to an equal education, WHAT DO THEY HAVE? An education is the only way out of poverty.
