I did have the clash on the list.. it is.one of my top favorite 5 of the year the other 4 would be...the 2 bowies....the sex pistols and elvis Costello debut.....some of the add ons I considered...the list is my favorites.
next list will be 1978...even harder to pare down to 30.

when you are in the midst of chaos you can begin to lose the ability to discern right from wrong...........he has broken down the walls of ethics and morality and distorted patriotism..........facts are fakes........ the simple minded are exploited.............corporate America is the god he prays to and his followers are the ones he preys on.
I went to a doctor.......he checked my heart and he told me to kafka.

Made me smile Dino! To your '77 list. That was a long time ago and just Pre-Petty if I remember right. That would mean just before The Pretenders, too, I think. I'll have to look thru the old LP collection, but (just off the top) I think you missed a bunch. Glad to see some others already suggested the Tull release, and Pink Floyd (of course)............. Didn't the Tarney Spencer Band put out a great LP that year? I think so. I'll look. You seemed to ignore all formats but pop rock? Doesn't the country-Rock stuff count? How about the Dead? Did they release something decent that year? I bet Pousette-Dart Band had a release that year. All of their LP's were great! How about Dylan or T-Bone? Didn't they release anything? I'll try to find some time............

OK I actually went and tried to look but some of my crates of LP's are buried by too much stuff so I couldn't see P --- Z. But......

Here's just a few I thought of.

1st off Petty had no 1977 release. 1st was '76 and then 1978. so no TP.

Some from my taste/list.
As mentioned by others Jackson Browne "Running on Empty" Great LP!

Some others.

Bob Marley--Exodus
Neil Young--American Stars and Bars (Great LP!)
Also Decade came out in 1976 so if you're including compilation's I'd think Neil's Decade would have to be on the list.
Marshall Tucker Band--- Carolina Dreams (probably their most accessible)
Emmylou Harris-- Luxury Liner (Seminal Country Rock LP-Can you say Gram Parsons?)
Muddy Waters-- Hard Again
Little Feat -- Time Loves A Hero
Poco --- Indian Summer
Jimmy Buffet's LP that year was OK. (Changes in lattitudes/Attitudes whatever it was called)
Robin Trower -- In City Dreams
Sutherland Brothers & Quiver-- Down to Earth
And if you're counting Live LP's you forgot one I know you know well Dino.
Wings Over America came out in 1977 and (If I remember right) that's a pretty good live LP.
Also Waylon Jennings released a good LP that year.
I bet John Prine did too but I'm just guessing!

:-)
