Does he? If one decides which way to take a story prior to researching a story, is he a journalist?

Unless, of course, you're going to point me to some of his work with a conservative lean.

If I talk to 100 people, but I know all of them are for the death penalty, am I researching public reaction to the death penalty?
His story on publicly funded stadiums leaned conservative. His story on government surveillance also leaned conservative.

If he thinks multi-level marketing companies are a scam, researches multi-level marketing companies and how they work, interviews people with direct knowledge of multi-level marketing companies, invites the MLM's to comment, and then presents his findings, that's journalism. Even if he started with an opinion on MLM's.
The China/human rights story had no slant but his interview with the Dalai Lama was just nonsense.
OK

The fact that his show included nonsense doesn't prevent his other work from qualifying as journalism.

Funny that people who think all journalism is "fake news/enemies of the people" would also use "He's not a journalist!" as a put-down.

It indicates that journalism is definitely secondary to his show. Not sure I'd take him very seriously as a journalist.

Oliver to journalism is a Playboy centerfold to modeling.

BL, you're wrong. John Oliver is a TV guy, sometimes funny, but his show is considered SATIRE.

And you consider it journalism. Which shows that you don't know the difference....

The funny part about this is Oliver claims to not be a journalist. But the stories his show produces are journalism.

I'm still laughing!!!

I get my news from real journalists like Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Stewart!

He's doing comprehensive stories on stadium financing, special tax districts, charter schools, healthcare, infrastructure, standardized testing. Yeah, there are jokes and there are plenty of satirical segments with no journalistic value, but a lot of the work the show does is journalism.

Non American Non Journalist Non Comedian John Oliver points out how stupid we Americans are for considering this legislation.....

over this legislation.

NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

Wow, way to conflate two opposing views. Journalism isn't "fake news". That's the whole point. But a lot of people around here (looking at YOU, BL) get their information from "fake news" sources because they really believe it's "journalism".

The media of today are NOT journalists. They're political commenters (and the occasional British comedian). All artifice around actual journalism is gone now... because people like BL can't understand the difference.

You keep saying that, but by the definition provided by the American Press Institute, Oliver's show is journalism (at least the main, long segments are).

Whether or not he's also a comedian is irrelevant.

I trust him on that self-assessment.

I think I see BL's problem now. Someone needs to explain to him that comedy involves exaggeration and hyperbole. And just because it made you laugh and nod your head in acknowledgement, doesn't make it "news" or "journalism".
