CLASS Draft for Dummies (Comments & Questions) Topic

any reason for no trades in future seasons? I understand why no trades in this first draft because we're drafting all 12 players. But I feel like allowing trades in future drafts might be beneficial. That way someone can draft the best available player based on their draft spot, even if their current roster doesn't need that position. Let's say Wilt is the best player available when it comes to your draft spot in the 72-73 draft season, but your team is already full of big men and you need a PG, but the best PG available is 92-93 Stockton. You can trade 72-73 Wilt for a lot better PG off someone else's current roster than 92-93 Stockton. No? I guess what I'm saying is that no allowing trades in future season diminishes the importance of the draft spot because you're no longer drafting the best player available, you're drafting the best player at the position you need to fill.

Again, that would allow tanking, and I think the idea is for every owner to try to compete every season.
Advanced planning is going to be a huge part of this League.
I'm just not sure why everyone is bashing the rules, which were clearly in place when they joined, before even seeing how they work.

who's bashing the rules? just asking a question. this is a discussion thread. relax. To your response, trades in future seasons doesn't allow or disallow tanking. It only allows trades. Your saying it encourages tanking because it makes a higher draft spot more valuable. But as long as there are future drafts, then there will be people tanking for a better draft spot. Just like in real life. I don't think the NBA's response to teams tanking in real life should be to disallow trades because they encourage tanking. Owners who are going to tank for a better draft spot are going to do it regardless if trades are allowed, because there's still a higher lottery pick to fight for with or without trades. The only way to avoid tanking would be to not have drafts in future seasons or to actually penalize tanking, such as -1 draft spot in the next draft for every game tanked within 10 games of the end of the regular season. That said, I don't play a lot of progressive leagues. Is tanking a big problem in progressives? Does half the field start to tank once they realize they aren't going to make the playoffs, or is the issue of tanking being overblown a tad?

If future drafts remain totally random, why would owners tank?
Allowing trades allows an owner to get rid of all his players good that season. That would be tanking, so yes, trades do allow tanking.
Yes, tanking is a HUGE problem (or strategy, depending on how you look at it) in Progressives. There are frequently teams with single-digit wins, and the teams who received the good players are winning 70.

good point. missed the fact that future drafts will be random, thought they were based on record

Trades are the Commissioners call whether to allow them or not. Personally I like trades
and don't consider them a form of tanking. HOWEVER in THIS PROG I don't think trading
should be allowed.
IF cmcafeeky wants each team to have 3 of each class then trading becomes difficult to manage.
I wouldn't mind trading if as an example if I could have 5 to 6 freshman or 5 to 6 Seniors etc.on my roster.
It would allow me to build accordingly.
However if I were Commish I would ban all trading in this particular league just to KEEP MY SANITY.
Trades are the most difficult thing to keep track of in a normal year to year prog
With the addition of Class to keep track of this could become too much to keep straight.
Lets face it most owners will be trading players and have no idea what their class status is and won't know the class of what their receiving.
So the Commissioner is left to sort through the details.
It will be tough enough keeping each owner's roster correct with these four different classes.
I guarantee you there will be at least one or two or three etc inorrect rosters submitted for league play each season.
Then it's Commish to identify and correct rosters. That's always a challenge with 24 teams and seasons come quickly enough
The more complex the league the more difficult to Commish

TRADES -
I can weigh in on the subject of TRADES -

The class system used here is a mechanism to
  • create roster turnover and change much quicker than traditional progressives -
  • Reduce long, extreme REBUILD times, (within 4 seasons your entire roster has complete turnover)
  • create dynamic PLANNING in regard to the content of each of a franchises classes and address NEEDS for rosters
A major tenant of the CAP progressive is to:

AVOID TANKING
  • avoid awarding a losing franchise and avoid the main incentive to lose (high draft picks) by having drafts determined by random
  • avoid TRADES and the negativity associated with questionable and or 'lopsided' trades -
  • REBUILDS in traditional progressives often employ losing early and trading for the future, often times creating TANKING.
I do not want to allow trades as part of this theme
CAP is based on the college or high school system (to some degree) -
trades are not a part of that system

makes sense to me, and keeping track would be an admin nightmare

Sea nailed it. my thoughts exactly.

Thanks for further explaining your reasoning, Commish.

You're doing a GREAT job with all this.

thank you all3 - I hope you enjoy it -

I have invested a TREMENDOUS amount of time RUNNING the league and RESEARCHING for the draft
and I can not say that I will have STRONG teams (lol)

- I think this is a fantastic CHALLENGE
If the theme and league benefit from our dedication, then it is well worth our investments

This whole CAP league launch has been a GREAT DIVERSION - from our pandemic
(in my opinion)

Agreed. Love this league.

Someone remind me to draft some guards please though.

???/???
Pippen/???
Marion/Ryan Anderson
Noah/Kemp
Hakeem/???

I think my starting 5’s ORB% will be about 45% though, especially if I start Ryno at SF. Might have to start a G-leaguer at PG though.

I was wanting Detlef at this spot about halfway through the 3rd round.

Seems like we both had the same thought about PG. I just now drafted one now but I had kinda identified early on that it seemed to have decent depth that I could wait on, and I was happy to get Scott Skiles as late as I did.
