I bet you will find that teens want to legalize pot more than seniors.

That doesnt mean when they grow up they will still think that way.
But if you had to guess which way pot legalization would go in the next 30 years, would you predict that the laws will get more strict or more lenient?

I have no idea what the laws were like in 68, let alone what the trends were. You didn't answer the question.

It does seem that it would be.

That doesnt mean it is. Or even that there is an overwelming pattern of it.

When something swings so quick in one way we would assume that it would swing back to some extent.

That is why I mentioned 68. With all the hippy movement stuff I am sure people assumed drugs would be legal in 20 years. In fact it went the other way.

But, as far as I know, there wasn't any legal movement in 68. Now marijuana is essentially decriminalized in Ca in small amounts and completely legal (at the state level) for anyone with an extremely easy to get prescription.

So maybe 50 years from now gays will be able to get married if they are terminally ill?

And that's a good thing?
I'm not arguing one way or the other. But if you look at the trend, it seems like marijuana laws are likely to be even more lenient in the future.

President Obama - like almost all politicians, including Mitt Romney, has changed his "public mind" and opinion so much that I am not sure that he even knows what he REALLY blieves in.

My main point is that on a divided social issue like this it is impossible to say.

Abortions are harder to get now than 30 years ago. MJ is easier to get, but coke is harder than 35 years ago. There is a whole underground market driven drug industry that makes an affordable highly addictive buzz in crack and meth.

After the lawsuits in Minnesota and other states and the campaigns of the Religious right we would assume porn would be all but illegal, and it is more available than ever due to a technology change.

I will admit that it seems that the age demographic seems to indicate that it would get easier, but the Gay Rights issue seems somehow divorced from the specific issue of SSM.

That's not unreasonable. Looking at the trends from several different places (and political ideologies) I'd guess that same sex marriage will eventually be legal everywhere, not just the 7 states where it is legal now. But anything could happen.

If you're really asking "Will society lean to more liberal ideas in the future?", I think we know the answer is "yes".   How that will translate to the legalization of SSM or marijuana is tough to say.   If I had to guess, I'd say stoned preachers will be marrying Frank and Bob while the congregation legally shoots up in the very near future.   Not going to say "That's progress" but that's where society is heading.   In my parent's day, teenage girls didn't get pregnant.   In my day, teenage girls dropped out of school if they got pregnant.  Today, they probably have day care at high schools.    If that's "progress", we're in trouble.

In your parents' day it was illegal for interracial couples to marry in many states.   We can all come up with examples of things that change over time that are good and bad.
