That was 1958, and we had a powerhouse team that won 115 games. The playoffs were never in doubt, so to keep myself entertained I micromanaged Spahn to as many wins as possible -- starts only against the weakest teams, and against everyone else he was in the Tandem B role, with the Tandem A guy a decent righty like Ralph Terry or Art Ditmar to set up the righty-to-lefty switch. I was disappointed Spahn didn't get to 50 wins, because he had a shot near the end of the season.

Slacker.

Seriously, it's great to see Spahn used creatively here, as not oonly is he under-utilized, but un the real world too often left out of the debates over greatest pitchers of all time. Is this, like Aaron and Musial, a case of being underrated for not playing in NY?

1965 is in the books. In real life in 1965, 44-year old Spahn went 7-16 record; in SLB, his ERC# is 4.45, his ERC+ is 82, and his salary is $3.5M. For us this season he went 24-9 (on a 60-102 team), marking the 19th straight time he's reached 20 or more wins!

I was curious what the MLB record was for most runs on 2 or fewer hits, so I looked it up on b-r.com:

the 10 runs scored on a 2 run home run, a wild pitch, and seven (!!!) bases loaded walks

its a league where you have to draft pitchers and hitters who are low AVG, high BB high K, high HR, been a lot of fun. it's also validating the three true outcomes strategy, as the current league batting average is .203 while the league ERA is 5.71. overall league slash line is .203/.356/.427.

In my Random Captain league (90M cap), another owner had 1987 Dave Smith start the season with 45.2 consecutive scoreless innings before giving up an earned run. As far as I can tell, the MLB record for consecutive scoreless innings from the start of a season is 41, set by Fernando Valenzuela in 1985 (please post below if this is not correct).

Dave Smith was good in RL (1.65 ERA), but throwing the equivalent of five straight shutouts is overperforming!
