I know someone who immigrated to Canada about 25 years ago, and he said it was a big shock learning his children had to listen to the national anthem every single morning at school. He asked me to explain the thinking behind that, and I couldn't. Same for sporting events. Play the anthem for home openers and special occasions. Every game seems like overkill.

This should not be surprising at all. I grew up saying the Pledge of Allegiance every day at school and listening to the National Anthem every day at school. 25+ years ago, the generation that was in power was the generation that had fought in WWII. It is understandable that nationalism would be prevalent. Today, the generation in power has a different viewpoint.
The pendulum swings but it should never "shock" someone. It's historic and cyclical.
