A worthy list. Can't quarrel with Won't Get Fooled Again. I would include Layla (Derek & The Dominos), Maggie May (Rod Stewart), Lola (The Kinks), Teenage Kicks (The Undertones), Once Bitten Twice Shy (the Ian Hunter original with the Mick Ronson guitar solo), Brown Sugar (Stones), Because The Night (the Patti Smith original), When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin), Born to Run (Springsteen), Who'll Stop The Rain (CCR) and Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones).

That’s some mighty good stuff.
the undertones - wow one of my favorites. Their debut album in my opinion was in top 7 of 1979 and that year had London Calling and Armed Forces.
Teenage Kicks is just one of the most perfect crafted pop songs ever.
if The Pretty Things are good enough for David Bowie they are good enough for me.
Karen Dalton is eclectic. Bluesy and folksy from late 60s on. Compelling singer.
Roky Erickson walked with zombies into rock and roll eternity.
I do remember The Gun Club always on my favorite college radio station.

good stuff!

I don't listen to enough new music, so I'll go with classic bands and artists that are like new because a lot of people haven't heard of them -- The Undertones, The Groundhogs, Pretty Things, Karen Dalton, the Flirtations, Roky Erickson, The Misunderstood, Gun Club, Rory Gallagher, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & Trinity and Humble Pie. For starters.
Lots of rich folk blues there. You say your list is "for starters" and 'not enough new music'. Combining the two with a slant toward more recent recognition, can I guess/hope your next wave includes Joanna Newsom ? She grew up down the road from us in NorCal plus was back page fodder at the time in some of my Grammy voting dad's industry mags.
Joanna Newsom for sure. She lives in LA now. Her music was supposedly inspired in part by Karen Dalton and some people compare the two, but I don't find them similar. Joanna Newsom at her best has psychedelic flavorings while Karen Dalton was the "hillbilly Holliday" (a comparison she hated). But Joanna Newsom is amazing in her own right.

I'd probably in a very small minority on this website......I listen to extreme metal genres(tech death, black, OSDM)
The new Asphyx album is really good. Nothing they haven't done before, but not too many do it better.
Yes its very good. Mount Skull is on my gym playlist

Some New Albums Coming Out in April

1. new Cheap Trick - if it matches the first single it will be a return to glory days.
2. Teenage Fanclub - great band....Bandwagonesque released in 1991 is easily one of the greatest albums of the 90s. They are a Scottish band and have elements of Big Star and the Rasperries.
3. Dinosaur Jr. - first album in 5 years
4. Alan Vega - late post punk pioneer of iconic band Suicide - a posthumous collection of unreleased songs.

Another album I sort of rediscovered recently is Dummy by Portishead. Bought the CD my freshman year of college and played it during finals week fall quarter 1994 nonstop!

Found it on vinyl at Target of all places. My oldest daughter is starting to get into vinyl and we were looking at records while mom was shopping the other day. I was impressed with their selection. Wasn't all Taylor Swift and One Direction albums! :P

I actually like Taylor Swift, post Red album. I own 1989, Reputation, and Evermore CD's and I'm not ashamed to admit it!

And Taylor Swift is re - releasing her album Fearless. There was a big fight with the prior label involving publishing rights - I think that’s right
and she is re recording all of her albums on the other label with new mixes.
the new Fearless is one of the April releases.

the only artist I can think of that re recorded songs ( not whole albums) on different labels was Frank
Which was always cool as often the re- recordings were sufficiently different to be like brand new songs.

It's becoming more common. Toad The Wet Sprocket re-recorded their "hits" on a re-release Best of CD. Danny O'Keefe re-recorded his better known/favorite songs on a re-release. Others, too. It's about publishing rights and performance royalties. On the earlier releases a Record Label owned the "publishing" rights to the songs. Re-recording "new" versions of the songs and releasing them allows the artist to retain "control" of the songs "rights" is what is going on.
