A chemical typically used to cook McDonald’s french fries could possibly cure signs of baldness, a new research report found.

Researchers at Yokohama National University in Japan released a study that found using a chemical called dimethylpolysiloxane, which is found in silicone and added to oil used to cook the fast food giant’s fries, is able to mass produce hair follicles in mice.

The research, which was released in the Biomaterials journal last week, said initial tests suggest that this method could also be potentially used to treat hair loss in humans.

The chemical, which is usually added to fries to prevent the hot oil from bubbling up and spitting out while it cooks, actually helps cells grow upwards of 5,000 hair follicle germs simultaneously when “cultured in the cooking aid,” scientists said.

“We demonstrated that the integrity of the oxygen supply through the bottom of the silicone chip was crucial to enabling both hair follicle germ (HFG) formation and subsequent hair shaft generation,” Yokohama National University Prof. Junji Fukuda, who conducted the study, told The Mirror.

The germs were then transplanted into bald mice that began to sprout new fur within days.

The reason for the growth, scientists added, was that the chemical allows oxygen to easily pass through it, encouraging hair growth.

Riddle me this

There's an owner in my Open League, three games in
Whose team has yet to lose a game, and yet to win

Two teams, same owner, same division.

I've never seen this before. I assumed it wasn't allowed?

what the hell that definitely shouldn't be allowed

I don't think it is, but I don't play many Open Leagues so I can't say for sure. It could be a one-time glitch.

By the way, I'm not calling out the owner at all here. I imagine he drafted two OL teams and figured they'd be separated. I know I wouldn't want two teams in the same OL, never mind the same division...

I just tried to enter two open league teams in a row and it put them in different leagues, that's really weird

How's this for turning a bad season around?

I have Lefty Grove in a 1940 prog. I debated cutting him when I posted my keepers, as Lefty's pretty average at the end of his career and my team already had over 1600 better innings than what Lefty could give me (going by ERC#, he was by far my worst pitcher). But he's been on my team his entire career, won 300+ games, Cy Youngs, World Series championships, etc., so I felt I owed him some loyalty. I'm a big softy, is what it is.

Lefty started the season 1-4 with a 9.33 ERA in 6 starts. At that point I took him out of the rotation and made him the back end of a tandem with righty starters.

It seemed to work. With a couple games left in the season, Lefty is 30-7 with a 4.91 ERA!

So I brought back Lefty for his last WIS season, 1941, despite him being, once again, a below-average pitcher (real life ERC+ 97) on a contending prog team that already had enough quality innings. We were in a dogfight all season for the pennant, so I held him back and started him only against non-contenders. In 25 starts he went 18-1 (8th most wins in the league) with a 3.19 ERA (4th best).

Counting only from his turnaround in 1940 (mentioned in the above post), he went 47-4 in just under two seasons -- two seasons in which his combined salary was under $6M!

Lefty's teammate on that 1941 prog team, Joe Dimaggio, just played his 27th career World Series game. His stats:

50 hits in 119 at bats, 8 doubles, 4 triples, 9 HR, 31 runs, 39 RBI, 13 walks, .420/.474/.782.

Multiple the above by 6 to get a full season's worth of stats (27 x 6 = 162) and you have:

300 hits in 714 at bats, 48 doubles, 24 triples, 54 HR, 186 runs, 234 RBI, 78 walks.

Again, these stats were compiled against World Series pitchers, not tired mops.

Uhhh, you never multiplied the batting average x 6

Well, in his 28th WS game (just simmed), Joe went 5-5 with a double, 2 HR, 2 walks, 5 runs scored, and 4 RBI. I'm not going to bother whipping out the calculator to update the full season extrapolations from my previous post, but wow. What a stud!

By the way, that was the championship clinching game for us. Forgive me for bragging but this will never happen to me again: my prog team the New York Yaks just won their 5th consecutive World Series (1937-41).

Doc, I'll go with Eddie Murray, Mickey Vernon, Raffy Palmiero.

Murray's the only one I'm reasonably sure will be in the top 3...
