Are we going to see players like James Worthy who's defensive ratings are in the 30's be better? cause he was much better than that in real life.

Sam Perkins is another example of a good defender being rated very poorly.

He could guard both James Worthy and Hakeem Olajuwon.

yea, exactly. Im not saying make players like Worthy and Perkins in the 90's but they were no where near the utter garbage of 30 or lower. Worthy was the one constantly given the challenge to guard Bird during that rivalry in the 80's, not saying he stopped Bird(if anyone actually could) but they put him on Bird for a reason.

Well, he played the same position as Bird and had the best chance of staying with him. Rambis was too slow, Scott was too short and too busy guarding the opposing team's best backcourt player since it was well known Magic wasn't a top-notch defender.

you guys are forgetting Michael Cooper (of whom Larry said he gave him more trouble than any other defender) and AC Green (who was the starter in more of the Celtics v Lakers series during Worthy's career than Rambis was) - not to mention the fact that Larry's greatness was not in outquicking anyone in the first place

but yeah, Worthy in the 30s is kind of a farce - he was at least mediocre

I'll give you that, and completely agree regarding Cooper. I watched a lot of those games, and Cooper should: a) have a higher defensive rating than he does for at least some season, and b) be able to play SF, which he did IRL on occasion.

Perkins a good defender? I don't know his early years, but when he was with the Pacers he was very slow.

You can play Cooper at SF. He just won't be as good at it.

I just saw that Perkins played for the Pacers when he was 37-39 years old. I guess I should give him a break. lol

Perkins was the type of guy who was a pretty good player and aged gracefully by figuring out OK, I can't do A-I anymore, but I can still do A & C so I'll focus on that. Defense was not A or C :)
5/13/2010 1:45 PM
Yep, he started out as a very good low post player and as the years went on his game moved more and more to the outside.

Perkins, along with Harper were the best defenders on the 80s Mavs. He dominated Ralph Sampson for years.

He was the only defender I ever saw stop Worthy's baseline spin move for a dunk.

I'm sure he had seen it a few times in pickup games at North Carolina.

I did not see him play hardly at all after Magic the Lakers, but I'm sure he faded with age, as they all do.

Perkins is a classic example of a good defender who is penalized because he was on a poor defensive team.

Im just itching to use the new players and see the changes - I hope they're good
