Jim Chones
And I always have to pay this story when I hear his name.
One night in the summer of 1978, I went to a Cleveland Indians game with my aunt and uncle. after the game, they dropped me off at the train station in downtown Cleveland and made sure I had my ticket back home to Rochester New York for that nights train (I was 12 years old)
After they left me there, I went into the men’s room and was at the urinal when a huge, tall black man came in and stood behind me,waiting.
I noticed he had yellow Lakers sweatpants so after I finished and zipped up, I turned around and faced him and said “do you play basketball? You sure are tall!“!
he said “well yes I do. I currently play for the Lakers but I used to play here in Cleveland. My name is Jim Chones”. I said something like “oh cool, I’ve heard of you! Well, good luck and take care!“
that was my brush with greatness with the great Jim Chones. Still have no idea what he would’ve been doing in an Amtrak train station in Cleveland around 11 o’clock at night on a weeknight in August, but it’s not my place to speculate LOL
I was at the summer league at St. Rose High School in Belmar NJ once. Many pros and top college players and big time high schoolers play in this league every summer. Lots of colleges coaches and some pro scouts are usually there. I went into the men's room to ****, and I am next to Jim Boeheim who is in the next urinal. I asked him what he thought of the then change in college for technical fouls, where there would be some t's that were not unsportsmanlike so they were only gonna be one shot and no possession change. He liked it.
