Well, let’s make something good and significant out of the new ownership. A tweak here and a tweak there, inch by inch, won’t make much difference in the slow downward trajectory of WIS subscribers or the games themselves. I sincerely hope they do something that makes a difference and breathes new life into the site.
As far as GD goes (since that’s my only game now), here are a few things that could be the significant changes I look for.
- Clean sweep. Since they’re going to use modern programming language and new code (really, how can they NOT do that, isn’t that a given?), it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a CLEAN SWEEP. Reset all school records and all coaching records to zero, square one, a fresh start. Establish only enough worlds in the new game to restore the competition from human coaches that we all enjoyed years ago before the number of worlds grew so large that they became overwhelmingly sim-occupied. It is also a once-in-a decade opportunity to realign the conferences to approximate the new order of things in the real-world NCAA. We couldn’t expect perfection in this, but closer to reality would be good. Moreover, such a clean sweep would be fair for everyone.
- Honest game. Get rid of all the exploits and be transparent in the house-cleaning. Absolute limit of one team per world per user. Take a firm stance against any future miscreants. Coaching records in that kind of a game would be legitimate, worthy of respect, no asterisks needed. And again, this is fair for everyone.
- Term limits. Do you know the present-day (real life) coach who has coached at his current job the longest? According to ESPN, the longest-tenured Division I FBS head coach in college football is Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, 24 years and counting. Two other D1 coaches are in their 19th year. Amos Alonzo Stagg, 71 years, is a unicorn. WIS needs to institute a retirement feature in GD, maybe 30 or 40 seasons tops, let’s be real. Have an honorary reward (designation as a Legend of the Game?) for anyone who reaches that tenure with a successful record (the standard for “successful” to be determined). That coach would be free to start fresh again, at the beginning of a brand new career. The new kings of GD could earn multiple “Legend” designations and the concomitant respect of all who play the game. No more unrealistic 100-year careers to scare off newbies, eh?
I toast the new owners and the new, improved WIS. Salud!
