Rest in the Playoffs Topic

Forgive me for posting this again as I know it’s somewhere in the Forums. My question is this: let’s say I have a 200 plate appearance catcher and I don’t use him at all during the regular season. Can I just carry that one catcher in the playoffs since he’ll get well below that 200 number and have him fully rested for my entire playoff run?

Contrarian is correct. If a player has used less than 95% of their PA, they'll get marked up to 95 for fatigue purposes. This is designed to stop the exact strategy you're suggesting. In the past, people were really abusing that and saving a few absolute studs for the playoffs and dominating.

Awesome that's very helpful. Thanks y'all.

I can’t agree. I once had a catcher with about 150 PA or less and only used about 80-90 PA in season and he then played 4-5 games in a row before he went under 100% and not by a lot.

I’ve had that happen a few times so I have seen it.

And starter pitchers low pitch counted during season and resting for last start or 2 fatiguing less per game then during the regular season.

what you're describing is the player being moved up to 95% of his PAs. if he had 150 real life PAs and you only used him for 90 PAs, it would take far more than 4 or 5 games for him to get under 100%

Now that I think about it the situation I’m thinking of was a catcher with only about 85 PA and didn’t play him for the last 15 games. He never during the regular season had such endurance.
And starters who who would be 75% after a game operate at 85% in playoffs playing every other game at 100% or close to it.

I have just seen true anomalies in the playoffs.

The Ol’ Fred Toney strategy

It was Bob Milacki

Coulda sworn I saw people save Toney all season to pitch every game of the playoffs

It could be and was done with lots of different pitchers, but Milacki was the biggest complaint for those opposed to the strategy at the time.

The 4/12/07 update that changed the fatigue model even specifically references Milacki...
