In an effort to better understand this game: let's say I am running NDB against the 4-3. I keep both TEs and the FB in to block and send the RB and WR out on pass routes. Are the two targets at a disadvantage because there are (possibly) three LBs to cover the one RB and four DBs to cover the one WR? As opposed to sending out both TEs, the RB and FB and the WR, which would put five targets that need to be covered?

Hope the spirit of what I am trying to ask or determine is clear...if not, please ask clarifying questions. As always, insight and commentary is appreciated.

I have found it easier to understand the thinking process of my 3 ex-wives than it is to understand the inner workings of the game engine of GD.

three concepts
  1. how far you throw
  2. how bad you need a reception
  3. how rich/pretty/kind the ex-wives

Re #3. And are they wide receivers

OP we don't know exactly how the engine functions but what you describe is pretty much how it's assumed the system works. In effect, it's likely a direct tradeoff - more pass protection and time for your QB vs. more available options/targets for your QB on a given pass play. In a vacuum 5 targets are harder to cover than 2 but exact coverages and results on passing plays depend on other factors as well(offensive call/distro/throw distances/formation vs. defensive call/formation/blitzes/coverage).
