Benefit of Blitzing Topic

Is there any tactical advantage to blitzing? Does it do anything? What is the (if any) strategy behind it? It seems to be a pretty unused lever in gameplans...

it attacks the ball carrier and/or the pocket

more stuffs, more sacks/scrambles/throwaways

of dubious value my opinion since (1) most teams pass more than they run (2) you're giving up a pass defender and (3) i have never seen a strip sack scoop score QB injured

so what it really does in this sim is allow you to attack from a passive defense

suppose you run one defense, a DIM, and the other guy exclusively pounds it up the middle in an IFO

you need more DLs so you blitz a LB and in effect create one more DL

because it's DLs that stop the run and DBs that stop the pass

why a 34 is the choice of many -- it's flexible

you can put eight in the box (3 DLs 4 LBs set to LINE and one 100% blitzing DB) or eight in coverage (4 LBs set to COVER and no blitzing) or anything in between

my two cents

He failed to mention that Blitzen was one of Santa's reindeer. Little known fact = Blitzen drew the maps for Santa to go the shortest route possible to distribute my-uh-our presents . He would drink heavily before map making thus he aquired that unique appellaton(he was blitzed :)

Little known fact, Blitzen was so fast that that German dude named his war strategy after him.

The way I understand it blitzing increases the "big play" variance in play outcomes. You can potentially create more TFLs(stuffs), QB pressures, sacks, and possibly INTs when blitzing while also making your defense more likely to give up some big plays to the offense.

It's situational IMO. Blitzing(or use of line) can be effective but certainly not in all circumstances. Of course talent, matchups, formations, and who/where you are blitzing from all factor into the play outcomes as well so it can sometimes be hard to analyze the risk/reward questions at play.

true but

in the NFL the QB is more than 1/22 of the game. he's more like 1/4 with all the rule changes to protect his pansy ***

in the NFL the QB is so potent that edge rushers are also more than 2/22, they're more like 1/8

point being to put the QB in the big blue medical tent and win the game

how them Jets doing w/o Rodgers?

in the sim the QB bounces right back up hucks it long and makes up the loss

it's a real shame that in the sim only on 3rd down does a sack make much of a impact

with the lamentable result lotta guys go for it on 4th

Bag, I was just thinking the other day how the wussy qb's of today would have reacted to a the different time. Like when Johny Unitas was there or YA Tittle.
The great ones of today certainly have talent. But how would they react when they were beat to hell. It was a MUCH more violent game then(not that it's not violent now ). But there is just no comparison.
Talent was one thing but getting up off the floor after having your head handed to you by a blitzing lb AFTER the ball was on its way(which now is a foul). QB was not treated lilke a diva then. He was just another player and any hits he took were taken in stride or he was taken off the field.

Yep. It was like a 12th defender in the red zone. And that's where the term 'post pattern' came from.
