Do people have a lot of success with him?

I've used him twice with OK results. Do most find his OAV overcomes his walks if he's in the right home park?

I've used 1981 Ryan a couple of times in lower cap leagues (80-90M). He performs well at that cap, and you can put him in a HR park, too (HR# 0.13). I don't think I've ever used any other year of his.

Ryan was popular in the old days when the salary scale and Sim engine were different. Now he has a few years that are still usable but not bargains. low oav high walk pitchers never seem to do as well as they should.

I'm looking at him for an $80mil league...looking like I'll be in San Diego Stadium/Jack Murphy/Qualcomm (0, -2, -1, 0, -1). I'm thinking he should do well in that situation, but his performance histories are questionable.

I've never really had success with him at any cap... never better than a .500 pitcher for me.

Yep, leagues that are filled with high obp players really eat-up high BB/9 pitchers. I think most experienced players rarely draft a pitcher with a BB/9 higher than 2.5 or 3.0.

Just looked at 1981 Ryan's performance history, and saw he has a season that he went 25-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Very impressive, if that's legit.

His average season is 16-10 with a 3.10 ERA.

Nolan Ryan is like Feller and Spahn. They all suck and I wish none of them did. I wish I could use these guys more often.

I know this isn't what Jt is looking for, but I've got Ryan in a progressive league and through 5 seasons (1980-1984), he is 85-51, with a 3.61 ERA. Not great, but not too bad either.

But as far as an OL or theme league, there are just too many better options for the $/IP. That's why I like progressives so much...players you don't normally use get a chance to shine (or suck).

I have used '81 Ryan a number of times, and his stats were ok, but not eye popping. I don't use him any more, there are just better options for the money. While Bilfert's opinions are highly respectable, I would offer that I have had acceptable seasons from certain seasons with Feller and Spahn.

Echoing mensu's sentiments...in Progs, Ryan is gold.

Not so golden in OL's or (most) theme's.

In my defense and to validate your point, I normally play in higher cap leagues. It makes sense that that would suck there. The point about Progressives is well taken.

He ruled when the Sim loved guys with tons of walks and no hits. Guys like Ryan and Tommy Byrne were kickass in those days.

Probably one of those CLK teams where they are 144-0. Really messes up the stats when those are included
