1901 Napoleon Lajoie Topic

I'm in a league that has five of this guy:

AVG / OBP / SLG +/- Errors

.374/.408/.509 30/1 14

.368/.397/.523 23/0 14

.360/.383/.521 31/0 24

.357/.385/.476 25/0 20

.320/.358/.437 22/1 31

I write this because mine is the one on the bottom. Not only is he trailing the pack in offense, but he has been a defensive liability.

My question is: Why is mine the worst?

A) Bad luck

B) Dead secondbasemen hate me

C) WhatIfSports hates me

D) Bad managing

E) Other

Because I know someone will ask, the ballparks are:

1) Municipal Stadium

2) National League Park II

3) Wrigley Field

4) WhatIfSports Park

5) WhatIfSports Park

As for defense, any chance you have more contact/low K pitchers? Does your Nap have more defensive chances?

Good point, my rotation is Alexander, Joss and Mathewsen. If I'm making more errors because of my low strikeout pitchers shouldn't I also be making more + plays?

Maybe, maybe not. Plus plays are related to range and are strictly part of the SIM...there's not a certain measured amount recorded from real life. With errors, there's already a concrete number there (along with fielding %).

But if your guy has more chances, that would explain more errors.

'+' plays take away hits, so no, your '+' plays would not go up with more balls put into play, because those extra balls put into play due to low K's have already been predetermined to be "outs". The fielder can still make and error on a fieldable ball, but there is no hit to take away. I could be wrong, but thats the way I understand it, and it would make sense.

Also, if your SS is playing any games at 99% or worse, your fielding% will drop dramatically. Play him at 100% only.

Also, the year of your pitcher matters some, but I suspect most of the other teams in your league have those same pitchers as well.

Because Mudbone decrees it!

Hand out!!!

Are all the Lajoi's you list playing the same number of games at the same position? Lajoi can play both SS and 2B.

Also, do all the Lajoi's have the same number of dead ball era pitchers vs modern era pitchers. (Fielding % goes up for modern era pitchers)

Midge...I just looked at your useage....you have won 35 championships and 4 TOCs out of 134 teams and you are asking the rest of us stiffs for advice?? Too funny.
5/29/2010 8:19 AM
I'm not really asking for advice, I'm just whining because my Lajoie isn't playing as well as the others are.

Now that I think about it, I don't think the argument that my guy makes more errors because of my deadball pitchers holds water because Lajoie played behind deadball pitchers anyway.

Couple thoughts:

1. Players make more errors when deadball pitchers are pitching. They field better when they have modern pitchers.

2. Errors can be misleading. Does he have more TC? What are there FLD%? A lot of times the variation seems more "normal" when you look at different #'s.

Lajoie Fielding % RRF

#1 .979 5.088

#2 .976 5.507

#3 .969 5.855

#4 .969 5.478

#5 .960 5.653

The actual 1901 Lajoie was .960/6.47 with 32 errors in 119 games. Shouldn't all of these guys be making fewer errors since no one is approaching 6.47?
