perfect guy...except for 1 thing! Topic

Not a baseball topic, but needed to rant

Met this nice guy, middle 40's like me, good job, finances are secure, divorced, kids are all grown and normal, not only does he like baseball, but loves the Cubs, can see my point that Ryne Sandberg is the foxiest man to ever live, and is cute in a receding hairline kind of way.

Perfect guy, except he let on he has an *** boat and likes to fish for his hobby.

I HATE fishing. What a stupid sport/hobby !

-It is always hotter than hell (I live in Vegas)

-you have to have the finger dexterity of a Brain Surgeon to tie a knot on a tiny hook

-you harpoon a helpless worm and then get worm guts on your fingers and no matter how much you wash your hands, the smell leaves a mental scar

-then you throw your line into the water and...wait and wait and wait for something to happen. There might not be a fish for 100 yards of your hook, but you will never know. (disclosure - I probably have undiagnosed ADD)

-if you get lucky, you trick a fish into swallowing your hook when all they wanted was something to eat. Then you get to take the hook out and you get to have more mentally scarring fish smell on your hands

at the end of the day, you have a sunburn, your back hurts from sitting in the stupid *** boat all day, your hands smell and you might have some fish or you might not.

I can tell from the look in this guys eyes he is going to ask me to go fishing this Memorial Day weekend.

I nominate both of these for post-of-the-week awards.

The answer is because we need to prove that we are good hunters.

So are you going fishing this weekend?

one of the first dates I had with my wife was when I flew in from NY for the weekend and we drove 2 hours to Woodstock Illinois to visit a Greek Orthodox Monastery. I'm not Greek, nor am I Orthodox but it provided a lot of face time and "get to know you better" conversation so I agreed to go. Turned out the Monks were on vacation and the Monastery was closed but we had a great time nonetheless. Woodstock is a cool little town.

Go fishing. Don't bait the hook. In fact, cast with an empty hook just so you don't catch anything. Enjoy the free unencumbered time togEther. Later tell him you HATE fishing, he won't ask you again.

We have never been back to check out the Monastery. It was just something to do that one particular day.

there's nothing more relaxing where you can drive an hour or so, launch your boat, and pop open a few beers waiting for a fish to bite. No phones ringing, no stress, not a care in the world.

"Fishing" is a sport which can take many different forms, and worms don't have to be part of the experience. My fiance has no interest in the sport, but Wendi accompanies me regularly, and says she enjoys it. She was up front from day 1 that she doesn't have any interest, but she wanted to be with me. Honesty is the best policy. Wendi and I leave early to fish, then go to have brunch together, and find some other things to do. If you think the guy is a keeper, you have to base things on honesty, and trustworthiness. Otherwise, you might as well throw him back right now.

what he says...

Just let the fella do his thing, everyone needs a little space.

if this is a new relationship I would think it more important to have as much together time as possible. Get it going first plenty of time later for alone time and allowing one to do his own thing etc. once it becomes more established.

Lots of things I do that my wife has no interest in and vice versa but we probably wouldn't have gotten together in the first place had we not done things together that maybe one or the other didn't care for so much.

You're going to have to go fishing or it isn't going to work. His *** boat is basically a banner that is screaming "This is really important to me!!".

When you go, don't bait your own hooks, let him do it. He's probably a master at it (read that sentence again. there's a hidden joke.). And just enjoy him away from all the Vegas distractions. If you're that addicted to distractions, then look at it as therapy time for your ADD ( a remarkably common flaw in women today ).

Great post!

I'm betting this has something to do with the Mars and Venus thing... though I have never read that stuff myself.

I would let him know how you feel... gently... outdoorsman usually don't like to hear they're idiots.

On the other hand, you can ask him to spend a day with you at the spa... he would probably feel the same way you do about fishing!

Good Luck!
