Open leagues you see many of the same trends and players. People are paying their money, so let 'em. I personally build teams around my favorite players (usually two at a time), and then to make them competitive, have to use some of the over-used (Rodman and/or Moses most often, though I'm using a lot of Troy Murphy lately) because of the weaknesses of said favorite players.
That being said, my favorite player is Barkley, who is a beast in $42M leagues, so he appears quite often. Glen Rice is another favorite of mine, and he's ridiculously good in $42M leagues.
Again, back to the point: originality would be nice, but unless you're buying the teams for these people, you should let them spend their money however they choose. In the mean time, you can check out some theme leagues. My favorite leagues on this site are two draft leagues, the ODL ($42M) and funk52 ($52M). In each one there's a draft, and drafted players are exclusive, so there's only one of everybody (through 7 rounds). It works really nice. And progressive leagues work the same way - only one of anybody at any particular time.
