08 Devine vs 18 Northrop Topic

Northrop has a respectable track record and has doe well for me.

I just stumbled across 2008 Joey Devine. I don't recall seeing anyone use him. His numbers look pretty good. Has anyone used him at high caps? How did he do? Sometimes these guys stats look good but they never quite produce.

I'm going to let one of them go. Your thoughts?

I definitely prefer Devine.

That said if you need a RP to toss alot of IP in a particular game, having Northrup is a nice plus there. Requires some micro-managing....

Let's throw the 43 Niggeling into the mix. He's got that nice .150 oav similar to Devines.

I haven't used him for awhile. Thought I remembered someone talking about his production being affected by a recent update.

Variable cap...still early, but very ugly. I've played nothing but guys at 80 million or below:

Joey Devine '08 (R) 100 9 0-1 3 7.0 9.00 .406 2.57 9.00 6.43 2.47M

I've used Joey Devine as my primary closer at high caps lately. I'm not really sure how you haven't seen anybody using him.

Northrop was better a couple years ago when his low whip meant something. the last 2 updates hurt him. his normalized oav isnt all that low and his extremely low walk rate is less meaningful now. niggeling has always been a solid performer but his salary is always a little too high for me.

The drawback with all real life relievers is their IP/G. If your Devine/Gagne/Eck is underused in the regular season, it's hard to "catch up" on those innings. And if you need your stud reliever to start a must-win game, obviously the Northrup/Niggeling/Milacki types have a built-in advantage over a pitcher who'll be tired after 1 or 2 innings.

Given the choice, I almost never draft a real life reliever to use in relief. I think WIS should factor in IP/G for pitchers' salaries (i.e., the higher the IP/G, the higher the salary).

True, but I believe SPs used in relief suffer a bit on their stats (~10% by my estimate.) As far as salaries go, I believe pricing is done exactly opposite to your preference. That is the more games a pitcher appears in (and thus lower IP/gm), the higher the price. Still, old-time low-IP starters can be superior despite the performance drop-off because in general they K fewer batters and therefore get more double-plays.

I've never noticed this. Of course I've had SPs used in relief who under-performed, but likewise with RPs used in relief. Has anyone from Admin ever commented on pitchers' stats suffering if they're used in a way other than they were in real life?

"That is the more games a pitcher appears in (and thus lower IP/gm), the higher the price. "

Again, has Admin said this? If true, what would be the logic of that? I want my pitchers (all of them, but esp. starters) to have as high an IP/G as possible. Why would 1927 Wilcy Moore (225 IP, 4.26 IP/G) be more expensive than a 225 IP pitcher with similar stats but 7.5 IP/G? I don't get it.

To clarify, both those are assumptions or more acurately hypotheses on my part.

It is odd. I have only played in 10 or so leagues so far and I am working to streamline the time I spend absorbed in this. It could be very addictive. So I have not yet studied the players and rosters as much as I assume some of you hofers have. After your comment I did a player search in the three leagues I am now in and found two instances of him - in the same league - and his whip was 1.2 ish as I recall. Not impressive. I will give him a try some time. Probably not on the team I am building this time. I will let him go in favor of Niggeling or Northrop. Thanks for your input
