Have a team in an open league that was absolutely pitiful. Headed to be my worst team ever - which is saying a lot...Team was 9-27 and getting pounded. No pitching, no hitting. So I pulled a move I hate and dumped a ton of dead weight. McGwire, Boggs, Youkilis, '77 Mitchell Page were all doing horrible. Dumped all my reserves to get cash. My 1909 Hooks Wiltse was 1-5 with an ERA 0f 6. Gone. 1980 Tug McGraw with an ERA of 9.50 - Gone. Must have paid $5 million in the 10% WW fee. Picked up '09 Greinke, '83 Tom Niedenfuer, '89 Tim Burke, '89 Howard Johnson, '88 Dave Winfield....hey - I'm seeing a trend with 80's guys here...Anyway - since the dismantling the team is 18-5 and clawing back to .500.

Probably jinxing them by posting this, but what a turnaround. Sure wouldn't recommend the strategy though.

As you know (and as I've learned the hard way), the waiver wire can be both your worst move and your best. I have had times when I thought I was UGRADING a position with a significantly more expensive player than the one I dumped and the so-called "upgrade" performed worse than the cheaper dumped player.

By contrast, I've also had situations were I've gotten real steals. For example, this season alone, I picked up a little known outfielder named Herschel Bennett for a little more than $1 mil and he's been hitting over .370 since I got him, 70 games ago. I also dumped a $7 mil .407 avg real life statistics player who was only hitting .280 and change for a $5 mil Carlos May who's hit betwen .335 and.360 with a .430 obp for more than 100 games. So, as you can see, the ww can help you and hurt you. You just have to be careful not to make changes for changes sake if there's no one there that can actually help you and you have to really scrutinize their numbers and history.

Dumping some of your bench guys to upgrade a guy or two is a good idea. Otherwise, you have to ask yourself why you didn't draft the WW guy in the first place.
