Where in a players defensive rating (ex. A/D) do the errors and the +/- plays come into effect?

first letter is fielding, the 2nd letter is range... A/D means A fielding and D range

Then I assume that the first letter (fielding) causes errors and the second letter (range) causes the +/- plays (?).

If this is so, why does 1989 HoJo (D/A) make 0 errors and have 30- plays per season?

Position. HoJo is D/D- at 3B, but A+/D- at SS. Most owners will use him at SS rather than 3B.
