I have a 5 man starting rotation that has pitchers with around 180 +/- IP per starter. I have them set for about 85 pitches as a target with max over 100.

What I am having trouble with however is my setup A guy (who is obviously getting a lot of calls) is coming in with the game fairly in hand. For example: being up 6 to 1 in the 8th and my SP reaches his target pitch count. I have other options available to come in other than the setup A guy so its not a fatigue issues with other arms.

Any solutions? if I were managing live I would have brought in a long A or B. Having a fresh setupA guy in this system is critcal but I am having severe issues with keeping him fresh.... and its not IP issues as I have targeted 120-150 IP for this role.

Thanks.

as much as I hate to say it (only because I don't like using one myself), do you have somebody you could slot at MOPUP? Maybe set a MOPUP guy, but not available until the same inning as your solid SETUP A guy. That way, the MOPUP couldn't be put in too early, but might come in for you instead of your SETUP man in the situation you describe above.

I don't think that's going to get it done. In a 6-1 game, I'd bet Sparky still brings in the Setup A because the game isn't a blowout. This sounds like a job for... Setup B!

you can preserve your setup guys by raising their Inning Available setting, or by resting them against weaker opponents. not an elegant solution but better than losing them to fatigue at the worst possible times.

how does that help the problem? Sparky will ALWAYS bring in a SETUP A before a SETUP B if they are both available. So, if they are both rested and available in an inning, regardless of the score, the A will always be the first pitcher called on.

Is that true? My understanding was that, in games when you're down a fair amount, he doesn't use your Setup A first...

*Checking the FAQ...*

The A/B designation is an additional control for setting pitcher usage. An A designation will almost always be used before a B designation of the same role, e.g. if you have one pitcher set to Setup A and another set to Setup B, the Setup A would receive priority in a setup situation. If both pitchers are set to A, then the SimManager will decide who to use based on the situation (opposing righties/ies, pitcher fatigue, etc.).

Is down 6-1 a setup situation? I'm not sure how this gets handled. My unreliable memory tells me I've had it work that way, but the last couple of games (and you) tell me it doesn't.

Long-winded way of saying I seem to have been wrong.

what I did last season was switch my top Setup guys to Setup B if I played weaker opponents or needed them to rest. I didn't put them on REST because I wanted them to be used if the game got close.

Also, I have seen the SIM put in Long A before Setup B as well ... even in the 7th or 8th inning.

popfischer is talking about a situation where his team is AHEAD 6-1 not behind.

My double bad. Wow.

Until the day comes where we can determine exactly which scenarios a pitcher comes in (+/- 2 runs, 8th inning or later, et al). We will keep getting these occasional dud scenarios.

I like having closers, but ideally, I'd rather have a closer come in in a tie game as opposed to one where I'm up 3, but that ain't gonna happen. C'est la vie.

i think having a reasonable setupB and switching them against weak teams is the only way to avoid the over usage. Thank for everyones input

I am almost getting where I don't even want to draft a Set up guy anymore. Mine have been historically bad. I have had just as much luck with Otis/Highball set to a 5 pull than a $1 million dollar plus pitcher.
