Out of Position clarity Topic

I've read through the OOP forum topics and understand the basics:

Spectrum goes (from easiest to hardest) as DH -> 1B -> OF -> 3B -> 2B -> SS, with C being a special case.

Out of position players are mapped from their primary position grades to the corresponding FPCT and RANGE at their new position based on those grades.

For fielding pct, every player moved OOP gets a 2% penalty, plus an additional 4% penalty for each move up the defensive spectrum.

For range, it's a 10% penalty, plus an additional 15% for each move up the spectrum.

==========================

My question is in trying to actually apply this. For instance, let's say I want to play an OF with A/A ratings at 1B.

An A fielding 1B has fld% between .995 and .998. Call it .996. Apply a 2% penalty. 2% of .996 is .020, so the new fld% is .976.

However, that is a D rating at 1B. Can that be right? I feel like I must be missing something here.

Type Pos G GS Inn PO A E DP + - Fld% RF SBA CS CS Pct.
Average 1B 86 86 766 862 82 5 64 10 0 0.995 11.09

This is '96 Lance Johnson. No 1B rating. I've never got a firm grasp on OOP play. I usually try to avoid it, and prefer to look up performance history referencesto get an idea of what I'm in for.

In my experience with playing an OF at first base, the D fielding guys will probably have a .988/.989 fielding percentage, while the A fielding guys will likely only have 1 error all year. Then kinda adjust accordingly, but I’ve really only fielded D or A gloves there

My general rule is:

If you are going down the spectrum, lower each grade by one letter
If you are going up the spectrum, lower each by one more for each spot moved.

This is by no means exact but it's a decent approximation that doesn't require any math.

thanks all, appreciate the feedback. sounds like we have rules of thumb, but nobody knows the exact calculations.

your calculation is correct, 996*.98 = .97608. the penalty is larger in letter grade terms for first base because the gap between A and D isn't large in terms of fielding percentage for first base

take an fielding shortstop for 2021. an A rating for second base is about .992. so .992*.98 is .972. this is about a C

edit: the draft center is a pain because you can only sort by normalized fielding percentage. the standards for an A fielder change significantly in different eras, so you should look at the actual percentage which I think you can only see by clicking their name and then looking at fielding stats.

the calculation is very straightforward, just multiply the mapped fielding percentage (or range factor by (1-[Penalty Percentage]). the actual percentage is more relevant than the letter grade

One question on fielding and range in general (and apologies if this is misplaced, didn't feel like a topic by itself and I tried to find the answer in the newbie thread but that seems like a mess):

Is range factor normalized in the engine? For example, a SS Range Factor of 4.5 in 2021 is far more palatable than a 4.5 in 1910. Does the engine take this into account?

yeah the RRF number you see is adjusted for the era by some secret formula WIS uses

As an oddity I noticed some time back in a Box Score a Team using a SS at Catcher ... $3,705,904 1892 Frank Shugart played 2 games as Catcher and was rated D-/A/A (.876/6.69) ... Performance History shows 279# times used with Average RC 70 in 159 GP 596 AB
.276 .333 .349
and in 152 GS 150 SBA and 47 CS or 31% ...

And yes I have used him in an 80 Open Old and New Team I had 1880-1930 with fellow team mates SS Bones Ely SS 1887 Jumbo Davis 2B Possum Whitted 1B Doggie Miller 3B Jimmy ***** and Catcher and CF Buck Ewing ... But not recently

From Above stated by 06gsp --- "... so you should look at the actual percentage which I think you can only see by clicking their name and then looking at fielding stats" I diverged slightly to maintain what differences there are in the ascribed Fielding Ratings (A+ thru D-) or in this case the Catchers ARM ...

boogerlips --- "prefer to look up performance history references to get an idea of what I am in for"

This made me think of Catchers Arms and the Range for instance of say only A+ ... With Arm 12 and 12 and selecting cspct we have at #1 2020 Roberto Perez with 71% in 32 Games and 297 PA ... PH shows 58% with SBA 25 and CS 14 and 84 G and 62 GS ...

Number 500 on the Draft Center list was 1971 Jerry Moses at 42% in 63 Games at C and 193 PA ... There is No PH ...

Before i started I was thinking an A+ Arm would start at about 35 % ...

So I limited the Search to Order: by ARM 12 and 12 with Minimum Games at Catcher "0" and Include Secondary Positions and Then By: cspct .35-.38 ...

Coming in at #25 was "A+" 1983 Dann Bilardello at 38% with PH at 33% with 84 SBA and 27 CS ~ half a season

At #26 was "A" 1999 Lenny Webster at 38% as well but with only 18 Games as Catcher with 62 PA and No PH ...

Changing the Minimum Games at Catcher to 20 (which I read somewhere is said to be the minimum games at which one can rely on the accuracy of Fielding statistics) and necessarily the ARM Rating to 11 and 12 in this case we have then the first "A" Rating ARM as 1975 John Wockenfuss with 34 G at C and 133 PA still at of course 38% ... PH shows 33% and 31 SBA with 10 CS in 39 G and 28 GS ...

I mention the portion of a season in PH because the better the throwing ARM the less SBA there will in 162 Games dictated somehow by the magnificent WIS Sim League BaseBall Algorithm and its machinery (no sarcasm intended) ...

I am in a bit of a position jam in a 2023 progressive.

OF
Lane Thomas B/B
Juan Soto B/D+
Corbin Caroll A/C-
Christian Yelich A-/C
Alek Thomas A/A-
Parker Meadows A+/A
Byron Buxton NA

1B
Harold Ramirez D/D- (OF D/D+)

How do I tackle this line up? I think Ramirez plays 1B. I can DH one of the OF. But when I need to rest Ramirez how do I tackle the rest? I'll need an OF to play 1B.

off the top of my head, put Yelich or Carroll at 1B and then one of Meadows or Thomas in CF when resting Ramirez

the math to get their exact numbers is in the thread so you should be able to figure it out, but I'd guess Yelich and Carroll are pretty close to Ramirez at 1B
