Bizarre 3 point shooting Topic

Why am I shooting so many 3's?  On pace to shoot over double the amount drafted.
Drafted 267, shot 199 before all star break!
Last 10 games have been stupid with my team going like 5 for 40 from 3.

dont worry you'll probably also shoot about 5% over your team's IRL average so it's all good
12/20/2010 8:48 PM

If you are running uptempo and you are losing alot of games or you are close in the fourth quarter if you are set to go into 3pt offense you could be shooting alot more than normal for that reason.

Something is just screwy with this team.  Fat Lever just took 29 shots in a game! Something is messed up with usage or how I have guys subbed in or out.  Who knows.

You're thinking about it too much.  Let me fix the statement for you:

Exactly. This sim has a bizarre way of doing things sometimes, so I wouldn't read into the anomoly's too much.

So true guys.  One thing I am learning is the importance of super high usage players (30%+).  Going to have one on every team from now on.
12/22/2010 2:07 PM
Although I notice qistat seems to be looking at the problem from the other side entirely and is winning with low-usage, monster-rebounding defensive squads.
12/22/2010 3:03 PM
To be fair, most championship teams in NBA history have had at least one high-usage guy (maybe not 30%+, but fairly high).  The one superstar, one/two quasi-star(s) + roleplayers model has been the best way to win titles.  It would be kinda unrealistic if you could easily win a title in this sim without at least a 25% guy (the only one I can think of that came close was the 2004 Pistons team... and Rip was at 25.7%, I just checked, and he had Rasheed and Chauncey helping out with the scoring.  Also, another weird thing with that year - Kevin Garnett had the most points scored for the season, apparently, although TMac scored more per game).  So, it isn't that weird that odd things happen when people put together a team without enough usage - you can't expect players to put up their real-life stats in that situation.  SOMEONE has to take the shots (and probably miss them, since they're likely forcing more difficult shots than in real life).

And Fat Lever taking 29 shots in one game doesn't seem crazy.  He took 16.7 shots per game in real life.  Do you expect him to take exactly 16-17 every game?  In real life in 1987, Fat Lever took 24+ shots in four games (he never took 29), and that was on a real life team with Alex English (29.2% usage).  So, for him to take in the high-twenties on your team every once in a while doesn't seem crazy to me.  Players are going to react to the other players on your team, they won't just replicate their real life stats.

As for why you were shooting so many 3s... maybe it has to do with your opponents' defense.  You don't seem to have any crazy perimeter threats on that team (as evidenced by your low # of 3PA), so maybe your opponents are all playing you at -2, which causes you to take more 3PA, as you can see at the below link:

Wow, you went through all that just to agree with the point that I already made (that super high usage guys are important)?   Since this was a theme league, you have to use what you've got available.

To address your last point (which I would've noticed and noted), ppl rarely played me with a -2.

I drafted 9500 points and 1300 to's, which I would think would be enough usage.

As I pointed out, we took 199 3's in the first 42 games and I only drafted 267 total.  If you can't see that is way off, I don't know what else to say.

And linking to a WIS FAQ is truly hilarious.

what is your record badja
1/20/2011 11:11 AM
Detlef

let me help you for a second without being mean...

You have only played 5 seasons of this sim so you don't know that the sim has nothing to do with RL NBA.  Most people do not change defensive positioning.  WiS doesn't have a practical understanding of the sim so the FAQ's are worthless for the most part.  It is like reading the owners manual for your car to learn how to  drive.

For the record 29 shots is insane considering his season high is 25 and the team was number one in pace that season.  You are saying that he would shoot 16% higher that his in season high in a very high paced offense.  Even jf badja is running a fast paced offense he still has to give up shots to Monster Haywood, Natt, Miller, and English in short bursts of offense.

Team: Denver Nuggets
Coach: badjas
Arena: Pepsi Center
Record: 51-31
Home: 33-8
Away: 18-23
Conference: 37-21 (3rd)
Division: 25-15 (2nd)
Last 10: 5-5

Gotta love the home-away diff.

Haywood scores 0.1 ppg less than RL, even though I played him 2 mpg more, uptempo, and he's the highest usage player.

That's pacing normalization.  Still blows.
1/20/2011 12:35 PM

The one thing I have stressed to people about real life stats is that you have to look at who you are playing against.  This appears to be part of a league like Gym Rat, and you are playing against All-Stars in every game.  Would a 69-70 Haywood score as well playing against Rodman, Barkley, K Malone, McHale, Duncan, or Garnett for 1/4 to 1/2 of a season?  Usage wouldn't matter since he would most likely be outclassed by these players compared to who he was normally playing against.  Do you think that Red Robbins, Trooper Washington, Bill Bridges, Don Sidle, Bob Netolicky, or John Beasley would compare?
