I know the obvious differences between setting an offense to slowdown, half court and up tempo. However, how does the Sim really treat them? I mean, does anyone have a definitive answer to what type of teams do well with which?

As long as you have enough usage%, I'd say run uptempo.
12/15/2010 5:22 PM
If you have a superior team in possessions and efg%, you want more possessions in the game (thus minimizing the opportunity for the dice rolls to go the wrong way by providing more and more opportunities for it to go the right way).  Higher tempo means more possessions.  So, really, a championship team (in the current sim) should always be up-tempo.

If you have an inferior team, you want less possessions so that you might get lucky.

everything they are saying is true in theory but on a game for game basis it's all a crap-shoot so keep in mind that you have to buy about $50 worth of seasons to see stats actually normalize

Using this team in uptempo, I had games shooting 39% and 43% against a below average defensive team in the playoffs.  So felonius is correct.  The sim is wreck and those outcomes are indefensible.

reg season stats.  seriously 39%?  Oh and I had a whole 10 fta's that game as well.

they're right:  it is a crap shoot.  That's why running up-tempo with a superior team is a good idea... more chances for the right thing to happen usually means that the right thing will happen more than the wrong.  But sometimes the sim rares its ugly head and totally ***** you.

Good post Ash.  But...I've been getting beat by a lot of half court lately, so certainly don't rule it out.  Esp if you have a high enough fg%.  That's what the other team ran on me in this series.

Here is another thought...

in the past I would run slow down with a poor offensive team, but a good defensive team.  This would allow me to score based on generating turnovers, and then run a plodding offense to limit the number of possessions that the other team would have.  A half court offense is good when you have a great passing PG that is not a high scorer and partner that PG with solid 3pt shooting and strong OReb.  I would like to see the other team because while you shoot at a good clip your OReb and TO's would seem to be a potential Waterloo against teams that a good on the boards and play solid D.

Don't view that as a critique of your team...I think it is a solid team, and definately an Up Tempo team.

It's because you have the better team.

defense has been almost irrelevant since you left.  With the recent salary changes, this might again be a viable strategy.

Im not so sure

in that open league we're in together I drafted 2 guys with 25 and 32 usage and efgs of 57% and 58% (and a 3rd support player with 20 usg and efg at 56%) and I still got pre salary change level rebounding (40+off/95+def) and 65% as% across my starters - the catch is that I only drafted 17990 minutes so i have no bench (but then again all 3 of my rookies are rated D)

it's all about whether there really is such a thing as a fatigue penalty

I'm in no hurry to stop running up-tempo teams.

I made a point to try and test the value of good defense in my most recent team.  Besides rookies, the lowest defensive rating for any of my players is 78 (Billy Cunningham (73-74); playing 14 min a game at PF and SF).  My lowest starter is Johnny Moore (PG)  with an 81 ratting.  Everyone else is 90 def rating or higher.  I'm currently 12-5 and tied for the best record in the conf.  More importantly, I lead the league in opponents FG% at 42.3.  The next closest team is holding opponents to 44.2.  I'm only 5th in pts against at 103.9, but I have been running Up Tempo for 10 of the 17 games (Half Court for the other 7).

It would appear that defense is important again.
