Stolen Base Oddity Topic

Not really complaining, because I have a league MVP on my hands. But still unusual. I have Micky Mantle '58 in a $120 mil theme league. He was 18/21 that year in stolen base attempts. I put him on a 4 for advanced setting base stealing. The season is 80% gone and Mantle is 0/1.

Didn't think The Mick was one to be discouraged by failure, but he appears he was really shaken by that one caught stealing.

I vaguely remember a post one time claiming that 20 SBA was a good rule of thumb cutoff for base stealers if you really wanted them to swipe some bags. Is this still the case? Anyone have some insight into SB post-update?

Also, just because:
I HATE THE SIM. IT'S UNREALISTIC AND EVERY PLAYER SHOULD PERFORM OR OUTPERFORM HIS RL STATS. THIS IS SOO BROKEN. NO SUCH THING AS STATISTICAL FLUCTUATION.

Actually, the worst under-performer on the team is
'04 Lyle Overbay
.222/.301/.311
I knew he'd suck at the high cap, but he might end up with a higher OBP than SLG. Ouch.

And props to uber-cookie Walt Weiss. Talk about no slugging. Check out this slash line:
'95 Walt Weiss
.243 /.364/.298

Where does Mickey Bat?   and how good is your offense?   He might not have that many situations where the SIM thinks he should steal.

If it helps, I have found there is a noticeable difference between setting 5 and 4.  Not so much between 3 and 4.

Overbay and Weiss should suck at 120.....

Thanks for the settings tip TJ. I know Weiss should suck, I'm quite pleased he's managed a .364 OBP. Just about what I hoped for and who can ask for more out of a guy who costs under four million. The complaining above was mostly sarcastic based on a kernel of truth.

Mickey has bat second most of the year with a good rotating platoon in the three hole that averages a shade under .300/.400/.500  and an MVP candidate in '89 Mitchell batting cleanup. Overall we have a top 5 offense with a .792 OPS with no help from the home stadium: Yankee Stadium (I).

The SIM has some sort of "decision tree" for when to attempt a stolen base.   I don't know for sure but I believe some of the factors are:
  • Advanced setting
  • Catchers Arm
  • Situation (outs and other runners)
  • Who is batting
  • Score
I have found that I almost never have an issue with my leadoff hitter trying to steal but the my 2 and 3 whole hitters sometimes don't try enough.   I am pretty sure that is because the SIM doesn't like to steal when a good hitter is up.

It is just a hypothesis, I don't know for sure.
