How do you combat '08 Joss? Topic

He is everywhere these days. If you know several people in your league is going to have him, what kind of offense would be best suited to spank him? I can't think of anything that works.

I have an OL team that just finished the regular season, and I used 1908 Joss, I think for the first time ever.  He was good (home park Safeco):

28-8, 1.82 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 6 Shutouts

1919 Babe Adams (who costs a little more per IP), was slightly better:

27-5, 1.29 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 8 Shutouts

Both great values.

If I had to draft an offense to beat either of these guys, I'd go with lots of left-handed doubles hitters in a doubles park.  Don't bother spending money on HR's -- Joss and Adams gave up 2 HR's total for me in over 700 IP.

Has anyone tried a high 3B/100# team in a triples friendly park?  I seem to remember reading that deadball era pitchers were more likely to give up triples than pitchers from other eras.

Try countering with a better pitcher like Maddux 95. Face it, Joss is the best value in the game...
Well, I am not completely convinced he is the best value in the game, but I am sure he is up there.  I think people underestimate deadball pitching impact on fielding.

batting average, doubles, triples, steals. speed should put pressure on the bad fielders. at least in theory.

In a Theme league i just finished (won by Grizzly and Bootone in 2nd) there were 12 Joss' in the league. 12...out of 24 teams. Both Grizzly and Bootone had the '08 Joss and another deadball pitcher to go along with him.  Whenever I went against a Joss I seemed to lose the game.  I am going to try the left handed doubles hitters next league I am in.

I had a team filled with modern low K pitchers and old-time super rangey gloves.  They handled Joss most of the time.

I find it a little too extreme to build an entire lineup based on a single opposing pitcher who may, or may even not, be in your league.  And even if he's in your league on several teams, is building your entire team just to beat one pitcher who you MIGHT only face only 10-12 times the entire season worth it?

Sounds like we might find out here in a couple months...

I don't think he's anything special, yea he's a good pitcher, like a whole bunch of others available out there. He seems to be on a lot of teams but I don't struggle against him more than other pitchers. Actually since the last big update I noticed that no pitcher really dominates the way they did a few years back, possibly because offense is cheaper than it use to be.

i wish I had the success everyone else seems to.  I've used Joss several times (granted, at higher caps...anywhere from $100 to $140mil) and never seem to get consistent production from him.  I always have one or two starters who perform significantly better.

Joss is anti-Canada.

The best way to beat '08 Joss?  The simple answer:  Put him on my roster.

$80M, 6+6 AA AAA, home Sportsman's Park (III), record 89-73:

Player SN T G GS CG SHO W L SV SVO IP H R ER HR BB SO OAV OBP SLG WHIP ERA
Joss, Addie 1908 R 54 54 1 0 18 21 0 0 336.3 369 140 111 2 53 96 .274 .303 .332 1.25 2.97

Joss was 2-2 in playoffs, allowed 2 HR.
