I completed a OL a week ago, finishing 96-66 but failing to make the playoffs.   Our division had the 2nd (98), 3rd (97) and 4th (96) best records in the league.  As much as I would like to complain, I'm sure there are many others who have had better regular season records that have failed to qualify for post season play.   It got me thinking, what's the most of number of wins you have seen that has failed to make the playoffs (I'm guessing around 105)?

i had 114 and got WC, my best reg season preformance and then knocked out in playoffs in like 1st or second round by a 94 win team, i think

I've had 105 wins before and finished 3rd in my division

  109 for 3rd place top 3 records I the league 115,110 & 109

But, once I won the division with just 77 wins, won a 1-game playoff, then won the division and league championship series over teams with 111 and 102 wins, before losing the world series in 7 games.  So luck goes both ways.

I recently won the WS with a team that was 82-80...and the had a hell of a finish just to get above .500.

In a progressive I'm in, I've won the WC each of the first two years with 90+ wins, but both years, I've had a 90+-win guy right behind me who missed out.  Last season, all four teams had at least 89 wins in our division.

In my 1st OL, way back when 1894 pitchers were the cookies du jour, I finished first in a division that featured 114, 113, 110, and 106 win teams. In fact, I thought it was very ironic as the entire NL went in win order. We were in the NL east, the NL central's best team had 90-some wins while their worst team had 80-some and the NL west was won by a 70-some win team and featured two teams with 40 some wins... And yes, I lost the WS, beating my WC winning division mate in the LCS before losing to a sub-100 win team from the AL.

I've had 7 100-win teams. 6 division winners, 1 wild card. 4 got knocked out in the 1st round and the other 3 in the LCS. I've been in 4 WS. The 2 I won were with 90+ win teams, and the two I lost were with 80+ win teams. I think there's something to winning 100 games in the regular season not boding well for the playoffs.

I think you are right I had 119 win team get swept in the 1st round by 78 win team.I never try to put a reg season 100 win team together any more.

Most of my teams don't have a built in "take my foot off the accelerator" strategy. So, I often win more games than I really should, because late in the season, managers who have clinched things are trying to rest players, and managers who are out of it aren't paying attention any more. But, there are certain players who, when I have them on my roster, assure me of, at least, being competitive in the post season. I don't think it fair that we judge ourselves on post season success exclusively. Random events have been vital in all 3 of my WS wins, as well as many of my early playoff exits. I was behind 3-2 in one LCS series, and was having extreme pitching faitgue problems. I started Highball Wilson in game 6, and set everything for him to go all the way. I was certain that using any other pitcher would have lost. Highball pitched a 3 hit shutout, and my now rested pitching staff came thru in game 7, and we went on to win my first WS. I didn't deserve to win, but Lady Luck smiled on me.

I won 108 and finished 3rd in my division the 1st year of a prog league.

Number of total wins doesn't show how good/bad a team is...

The best OL team I've ever build (prior to last update) finished with 84-78 (1 or 2 games lead). I had 3 starters, Pedro '99, Pedro '00 and Maddux '95 and a stud bullpen (something like Niggeling, Milacki, Carlos, MAdams, BAdams) plus 7 or 8 batters who finished above .300 (375-450 PA guys like Hollocher, Lowe, Williams...) at Safeco. Total quality IP below 1000, total quality PA below 4000.

I managed my team to stay above my division rivals and entered the playoffs with a dominant full rested team (had to throw out 37 or something games during reg. season). I won the WS (my 1st) and reach the semi of (my 1st again) TOC (and maybe lost because of fatigue issues with most of my players around or below 90%).

Concerning OP, my first "good" OL team (97-98W) missed the playoffs...

My conclusion: better quality than quantity. And its still doable since the update if you put your AAAs and scrubs in the best conditions possible (eg. Howie Clark, facing only RHP in double-friendly parks, hit over .350 for me on my last two teams, and most of my AAAs had .290+). Only important thing is to manage to make the playoffs, tough div. are just random badluck, but once in the post season team numbers don't matters in terms of quality teams.
