1990 Joe Carter
697 PA, 24 HR, .235/.293/.391, $5.8M, $8,412/PA

1990 Cecil Fielder
673 PA, 51 HR, .279/.378/.589, $5.6M, $8,375/PA

Note: AVG/OBP/SLG are all # values.

Carter's defense is much better.  He's rated A+/A+ at 1B and B+/A- at OF, while Fielder's C/C+ at 1B.  Still, that seems out of whack to me.  Given a choice, why would anyone ever take Carter over Fielder?

Players who are good on defense at multiple positions became very expensive with the latest update. Its not that he is better at the one position but that he does it at 2 positions that makes his price skyrocket.

Sure, but you can't play him at 2 positions at once.  Wouldn't it make more sense to take the player's best defensive ratings (at whatever position that may be) and price him according to that?

I didnt say it was right, just telling you why it is.

I think there should be some sort of middle ground. For instance a guy like 2008 Nick Punto who plays 4 positions well is more valuable to a team then a guy with similar stats and only 1 position. That kind of flexibility out of one player should cost something, just not as much as it does now.

I agree that those players can give you some extra value.  For example, if I drafted 1990 Joe Carter for an OL team (or any league with "don't-draft-your-own" AAA), I could leave open two positions -- 1B and OF -- where I could have my pick of the better rookie hitter.  Or even switch Carter back and forth, if the rookies didn't have enough PA.

However, in the typical league that I play in (no WW, no AAA), I wouldn't get much out of a player with more than one defensive position.

In any event, I can't see how in the above case Carter's better D and flexibility would result in him being priced higher than Fielder.  I just had a look at their performance histories and it seems their popularity in OLs reflects this (1 use for Carter, 19 for Fielder).

Defense in general is (in my opinion) overpriced right now.  As kneeneighbor suggests, this is particularly true of players who are good at multiple positions and is an example of WIS overcorrecting for a problem as seems to be their trend.  I used to use 1991 Tony Phillips all the time as a cookie 2B.  Now I never use him.  He went from great OL value to no value.

At some point they will re-correct this, but for now the pricing system continues to create obvious relative values in OLs (and in theme leagues with similar rules to OLs).
