I'm bored, so figured I'd start a discussion.

Assuming you can choose your own park and pitching staff to suit your offense, do you generally find that having a lot of speedy singles hitters is more effective or stacking your lineup with (preferably high-walk) bombers?

I guess in other words, small ball vs. the "wait for the 3-run HR" approach.

And no, a balanced lineup is not an answer in this case. If you had to go one way or the other.

SPEED as long as they are good singles hitter.The home run guys almost always tank in the playoffs.Speed does not slump but 1964 Johnny Roseboro can make speed look as if it is in a slump.So good speedy hitters is better.

I have a slight preference for power. In either case you need a fair number of walks. If you get your walks but you can't hit homers or steal, you'll struggle to score. But in that environment, one HR is worth more than one steal, so I prefer power.

The flip side is that speed helps in other ways, if you get 2 walks and 2 fielders choices then you have a run.

even if a good catcher can limit stolen bases, speedsters can still win you games with high hit & run setting and also they always take the extra base on hits... like my +++range team that I just drafted, they all have good speed but poor SB% so I'll just set them at 2 for SB but they'll be running all out on hit & run and taking extra bases on hits and hit in fielders choice rather than DP...

so, personally, I like speed better. The other thing is, so many people draft deadball pitchers that most times your sluggers will barely give you half the HR you paid for.

Well Grizz your teams do more then OK!!!!

I've used both, have won and been squashed with both in playoffs. The HR teams are both more fun and more frustrating, but I like the dramatics of it much more.
Bottom line if your pitchers tank in the playoffs it doesn't matter what you put on the field, (no surprise there).
If you want a vote, put me down for the HR team.

I've never bought HRs before. Just can't make myself do it.I'll have to try sometime tho..

i have a value proposition i run that equates speed with defense

by that i mean, speed is good but it's only 1/6 of your offense

defense is good but its only 1/6 of your pitching



speed and defense are basically hedges

This. My most successful teams are usually uber defensive failures. As far as the initial question goes, I choose power. Great arms are even cheaper and more foolproof than great HR/9+ deadballers with none of the downside. Plus, many of the elite OL-priced HR hitters also hit a decent number of doubles. Those same homer-depressing deadballers tend to give up a ton of doubles.

Easy answer here, depends on what park.
