Does anyone know how passed balls are determined?

I am using 1999 Ivan Rodriguez in a $140M theme league. He has 8 passed balls (with about 40 games remaining). He had 1 passed ball in 1999.

What about wild pitches, hit batters, pickoffs, etc?

Greg Maddux hit 2 batters in the same inning, and 3 in 2 games. Then he threw a wild pitch that scored a run. He had 4 HBP and 1 WP in 209.2 real life IP.

I had a pitcher picked off base recently who was 0/0 SB, 20 SBD in 0 PA. His Base Stealing was set to 1 (I have changed it to 0).

Are they just randomly generated events rather than based on actual statistical results?

yes

The passed balls are directly and only related to fielding% as best as I can tell. I could be wrong though. If thats the case, remember that fielding% drops if you use a pitcher older than 1999.

A catcher with D- fielding will get a whole lot more of those random passed balls than one with A+ fielding. A pitcher who walks a lot of guys (hello, 2004 Scott Williamson!) will throw a lot of random WPs.

1. Is Ivan fatigued?

2. Pickoff - what was your hit and run setting?

1. IRod is always 100%. His fielding rating = B+/A/A+

2. Team Managerial Style Hit and Run: 1 -- Rare

I get frustrated with things like this sometimes too, but I have to remind myself that, in spite of the formulas used, there is still some randomness involved.

If you flip a coin, there's a 50% chance of heads and a 50% chance of tails. But if you flip it 100 times, even though the odds are equal every time, you could end up with 65 heads and 35 tails. It's just how it works.

Johnny Bench had 0 passed balls in 1975.

In another SIM theme league I'm in, he has 2 passed balls in just 39 games.

Papelbon had 5 HR allowed one year in RL (forget what year, too lazy to look it up). He allowed 6 HR by the all-star break for me. It happens.

And like every other owner, I'll tell you that it happens to me more than anyone else!!

The batter has input in that result. What does the batter have to do with passed balls or wild pitches?

If SIM is faithful to RL, seems like a catcher might have more passed balls in SIM than in his RL season if he was catching pithers with a disproportionately high number of wild pitches, since passed balls/wild pitches are often a close call. Don't know if SIM factors that in.
