Where to put best hitters in lineup Topic

I currently have a team using 1928 players and I have Ruth and Gehrig. Setting my lineup, it made me curious as to some other philosophies people use in terms of where to place their hitters.

In this case, with Gehrig's .374 average and 1.115 OPS, would you bat him and Ruth 2-3, or 3-4. Obviously I want to give both plenty of RBI opps, but Gehrig is the best on-base guy on my team, so I'm tempted to move him up to the two-hole.

Thoughts?

Depends on the rest of your team as well as PAs of the players in question. But generally I'd say bat them as high up in the lineup as possible. I'd put Ruth #2 and Gehrig #3. My next highest h/PA hitter, Id bat #4 and my next highest obp guy would go #1. If I have a low avg, high obp guy- especially if he was short on PA, I'd put him #9 and the pitcher #8.

Best hitter goes 3rd bat them 3 and 4 "Lou 3 and Babe 4th

Yeah, I wouldn't hit Ruth before Gehrig...Gehrig is a better on-base guy and Ruth has twice as many HR. I want Gehrig on base for those bombs.

If they have the PAs for it I'd go Gehrig 2 and Ruth 3.

As a general rule I use this (assuming I have enough PA to make it work):

1. Highest OBP
2. 1st or 2nd Best hitter (the one with a higher speed)
3. Slower of my 1st or 2nd best hitter
4. PLayer with the highest BA
5. PLayer with the highest SLG
6-8- I hit them in order of slg (unless I have a good base stealer, then I put him at 7)

Long Story Short, I would bat Ruth and Gehrig 2 and 3.

Gehrig 2nd if he's not using all of his PA batting lower. he has huge BA/OBP and doesnt' hit all that many HR so it's better not to waste his PA batting lower. if your hitting is so good he fatigues at #2 then 3rd or 4th is probably better.

Best would be to bat two high obp guys 1 and 2, Ruth 3, Gehrig 4 (as they generally batted in life), and back Gehrig with another top hitter with some pop.

how did you get Ruth & Gehrig

It's a season league. I took 1928 and can use any players from that season.

I'm curious as to why zubinism, trenton and greg think Ruth should bat before Gehrig, when Gehrig has the better average, better OBP, and Ruth has twice as many HR. I'd rather Ruth be hitting 2-3 run shots than solo bombs with Lou on deck.

what does 1st or 2nd Best hitter mean (ignore speed)

Just looking at my lineup, those two clearly have a leg up on the rest of my lineup in overall offense...I wasn't really quantifying it with anything specific.

But they're top two in my team in OBP, Ruth is hands down first in HR, Gehrig is leading by far in AVG. They are also 1 and 3 in walks and top two in RBI. They're clearly my two best hitters.

I made two minor changes above, but otherwise TJs lineup plan is the same as what I use.

In RL, Gehrig generally batted behind Ruth so opposing teams would actually pitch to Ruth. That's not as big a factor here, but IBBs are still possible, so if you want Ruth to crack those homers, and nobody else in your lineup could protect him, I'd go Babe 3, Lou 4. I'd also want two guys with good potential to be on base batting ahead of Ruth, not just one, to increase the chances his homers would be two- or three-run shots, and to give them both more RBI opportunities.

I don't have a formula, I just look at guys and go these 2 are my best. It's basically the guys with the highest AVG and SLG
