The mysterious numbers are in fact the retired jersey numbers of Yankee baseball players. If you say the names of the retired Yankees backwards very quickly (Lou, Yogi, Thurman, Whitey, Don and Jackie), you will learn why Walt "No Neck" Williams has no neck. And of course the Others are Red Sox.

They actually showed an alternate ending with Bob Newhart waking up from a dream with Evangeline Lilly in bed next to him.
