Low OAV or BB/9? Topic

Which do you think is more important when drafting your pitching staff?

A. Very low OAV.

B. Very low BB/9.

Your general opinion, assuming all other factors are neutral. Thanks.

mix of both. you can lean more towards one or the other depending on the ballpark or other stats of the individual pitcher

Also your defense matters.

I look at the OVA# before the BB/9

I usually set my limits on BB/9 to 2, 2.5 or 3 and sort by oavg#.

the question is choose b/w the two.. low oav is much more important in the avg open league as of right now

given the two with average defense, in an average park I would probably go with low walks.

If I got to pick my defense and parks and I would DEFINITELY go low walks.

If I had to play in a + park I would go with low OAV.

That's about what I do, although I set my bb/9 no higher than 2.75. I also use the ERC#

You should fear the base hit more than a walk. At the most, a walk only advances runners one base, while a basehit probably moves them 2 or more.

At the right time, a walk can actually be a good thing, while allowing a base hit is never good because that basehit may go over the fence.

I'd much rather have the low OAV. And that's even when I have a great defensive team. I have no problem with walks - I'll gladly take a guy with a .160 OAV# and a great HR/9 even if he walks 4 per 9 innings. Unfortunately it's hard to find low OAV and great HR prevention together.

and where they do co-exist, they are expensive.

Both, if you have alot of bb's, your going to give up alot of runs. If you give up alot of hits, your going to give up alot of runs. Do the research!! The combinations are out there, you'll find something that fits if you look hard enough.

Never understood why people use ERC or ERC# as it doesn't figure directly into the WIS decission trees.

For the same reason they use WHIP and SLG.
