Errors by Position by Year Topic

Here is some simple data I cam up with based on SIM averages for putouts and assists by position. Error totals by game are assuming OF errors only occur on putouts and infield errors are only on assists. To be clear, this chart is not supposed to be predictive. I made it to understand how errors in the sim trend by year for a given position.

How did you accumulate the data, and was it post-update?

Avg putouts or assists/ game * average fielding percentage given on the averages page. Again, just looking for the trends across the years.

Very interesting.

I've always thought that SS was the toughest position to play and based on the numbers showned here looks like that might be true.

Except for the late 80's to now SS had more errors. Now it seems that playing third might have become just as tough if not tougher. Must have something to do with more RH power hitters pulling the ball.

What I found interesting was that you have to go back 50+ years before you see a real break in overall fielding percentages. In sim terms, it means there probably is little overall (different) effect on errors for pitchers from ~1950- today.

In practice, I notice that pre 1940 players might have, for example, a B+ fielding rating, despite making more errors than modern era player with a C (or worse) rating. I wonder how that plays out in the game?
