Newbie Questions Topic

I read the newbie information given in a previous email. Thank you for the information. Being new to "WhatIf" I have a few questions so I can understand the workings of the game better.

What affects a pitcher's performance more? Slg Pct against or HR allowed normalized?

Is a .656 Slg Pct against poor for a SP?

Should you set your batting order as a MLB team would(ex. good lead off hitter such as Stl. McGee or a very high OBPy with average speed)?

Why does Sparky let a relief pitcher bat in the 8th inning in a tight game when I have more closer rested and plenty of picn hitters available?

When checking a boxscore are all the negative fielding plays displayed?

Example; 3B has a fielding grade of C and a 2B with a range of C. To what degree will my defense suffer?

Any information passed on will be greatly appreciated.

I never look at .SLG against, ever. However, many, many factors affect how a pitcher will perform.

lol

It's up to you.

Why does Sparky let a relief pitcher bat in the 8th inning in a tight game when I have more closer rested and plenty of picn hitters available?

Check all of your settings... do you have 'closer to appear only in save situations' checked? Does the pitcher that hit have the box for being able to be pinch-hit for checked? Sparky does dumb **** sometimes, but you can prevent a lot of it by going through all of the settings.

When checking a boxscore are all the negative fielding plays displayed?

The box score shows a (-) thing in the play-by play part.

Example; 3B has a fielding grade of C and a 2B with a range of C. To what degree will my defense suffer?

... it's not really that black-and-white, but higher range is always better. Some people won't use guys with C range; others don't give a damn.

Any information passed on will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. I do have all the proper boxes checked in regards to the relief pitcher not being pinch hit for. I thought I could be missing something.

I assume your lol comment means .656 is a disaster for a pitcher.

I have what Ibelieve is a weak staff and my home field is Atlanta Fulton County. Needless to say my pitcher's are being lit up like Christmas trees. We are not allowed to pick up players, only make trades. I haven't had the best of luck in making deals. So I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have. any advice will be useful.

The first three questions, as inkdskn hints at, are "How do I win?" questions.

Example; 3B has a fielding grade of C and a 2B with a range of C. To what degree will my defense suffer?
A+ range yields (or is supposed to) about 30 "+" plays at every postions except catcher (and possibly pitcher) for a full seasons worth of PAs. D- range will yield 30 "-" plays

No, they are not"How do I win questions." I'm trying to understand how the engine works. My pitchers are getting hammered and I have used the advanced settings to try and get the best out of my staff without any luck. Also, I am confused with Sparky and his pinch hitting for relief pitchers or lack there of.

As I stated any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.

Yes they are, and you're welcome for the information I took the time to give you. The last few questions you asked were of the "trying to understand the engine" variety. Ask more of those.

Slg % against and HR/9 normalized go hand-in-hand. Some say ERC# helps suppress XBH but it goes alot deeper than that. P from years with alot of triples "supposedly" suppress them but in all honesty, you really don't have to worry about that stuff. Worry about HR+ or HR/9#, OAV# and BB/9# and how they normalize. Player History is a wealth of information if you learn how to read into the stats.

If you play in a +HR park using anything but the very best HR/9+ pitchers can be suicide. Unfortunately, trades of drafted players in WIS are extremely difficult to say the least. With the new IP and PA req. the only drafted players you'll see traded are the exact same guys traded for eachother if they are both underperforming for their owners.

Once again, thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge of the game with me. It's a fun game and I've enjoyed reading the forums and will continue to do so.
