Assuming a full season of 700 PA's (population)

You can be 95% sure (confidence level)

that your players numbers will be within 5% (confidence interval)

after 248 PA's (sample size)

Gonna depend on the number of innings your pitcher would pitch in a full season - for 300 innings, you should know after about 169 innings - use the link to the calculator above - for 75 innings (like a reliever) it will take 63 innings.

Of course the 5% elbirdo quotes actually means 50 batting points....

Take a .250 hitter after 248 AB (not PA). The 95% CI is given by [.196, .304], because

.250 + 1.96 SQRT(.25*.75/248) or [.250 - 0.054, .250 + 0.054].

So it's true that it is 5% in absolute terms, but it can represent 20% of the hitter's batting average.
