RF or LF more important? Topic

Because of the extra chances LG gets, I've always assumed LF was more important defensively. What are others thoughts on this?

LFers get a few more chances, but I figure errors are more costly in RF. All other things being equal, I put the better fielder in right.

been debated here several times. they are nearly equal and the majority believe LF is slightly more important in the Sim.

In real baseball the stronger arm goes in RF because he makes longer throws while the quicker player goes in LF because pulled hits may be hit more sharply. none of this matters in the Sim. Statistically RF make more plays than LF. It's counter-intuitive and does not mean more balls are hit to right. RF covers more ground because outfields are shaded to the pull side, and RF has more time to catch up to a flyball if it's not hit sharply.

Just checked my most recently completed OL. On the whole LF had significantly better range factors than the RF. A little bit of that might have to do with +/- plays and errors due to better fielders being put in , but the difference appears to be big enough to suggest that more balls were hit to field, making the fielder slightly more important. Things like where the fielders have to play and where a stronger arm plays better don't matter in the sim.

Forgot to mention that if you have time you can micromanage it. The sim treats all hitters as pull hitters, a fact which really shows up in outfield chances. If most of your opponents hitters - especially the power hitters - are right-handed, put the better fielder in . If they have more ies in the middle of the lineup put him in right.

in RL the better defensive player is in right because the ball to the corner or the wall is more likley to lead to a triple as the play is further away from the bag.. the above post is correct as far as the SIM is concerned

Great analysis, in fact the best analysis of RL player characteristics in the OF.
