Starting Pitcher Adjustment Topic

Two questions:

I'm currently using a 3 man rotation with RL ip of 309, 290 and 246. After each start, the first two sp are always back to 100% by their next start, but the 246 inning guy is generally only at 93-95% by his next turn, which reluctantly causes me to use a spot starter right before him in order to get him back to 100%. I have several long relievers with decent RL numbers (80-85 IP, sub 3.00 ERAs and one of them was a RL starter.

My first question is what would be the best way to keep my 246 inning guy (No. 3 starter) at 100% for every start? Reduced pitch count, tandem with a long reliever or what? If tandem, how do I do it?

My second question is at what % of fatigue should I not start a SP. I've seen starting pitchers at 60% have decent outings while others at 90-100% get rocked.

Any suggestions?

Or just decreased the PC for the 309 and 290 guy and have them start more games. Every 3 go around, rest ur 3rd sp.

I can't help you with the 2nd question, though I rarely if ever start a pitcher below 95.

As for the first, what pitch counts are you using? The formula I use to set pitch counts (which is generic and doesn't take into account the actual P/IP for each pitcher) suggests you should be using the following:

309: 90/95
290: 85/90
246: 70/75

If you are using higher pitch counts, that almost certainly accounts for the fatigue problem you are describing.

Well I would give you my suggestion. But since I am in second place behind you I will hold off.LOL

either low pitch count if you have a deep bullpen, or use Spot Starters. I prefer using spot starters because I can pick and choose when to throw them. I typically start them against weaker opponents or inter-league games, saving my best for the most important games.

I prefer to keep my pitchers at 100% for most of the season if possible. makes no sense to play them tired and rest them later. I'll play them slightly fatigued during the stretch run only if it's a close race, otherwise save them for the playoffs.

you can often get good outings at 90-99% but the odds aren't quite as good. sometimes you'll do fine at lower %, it's no different than a mediocre pitcher throwing a good game sometimes.
